You need to order the thick gear to fit the 2 series carrier. Either that or go with a 3 series gear and buy a spacer. Buying the think gear is cheaper and easier, though.
You may want to go ahead and get a Master Install Kit as well. It will replace all of your bearings and shims and since the rear end will be apart anyways, you might as well give it a rebuild.

You may also want to look into getting either Motive Performance gears or Strange gears. They are the only two companies that make thick gears to fit a 3 series carrier. The standard Motives are known to be quite loud...almost like Richmonds.
However, the Motive Performance, as well as most U.S. gears, are typically quieter given a good install.

yes the gears i am ordering are for a 2 series carrier and are from motive, but they don't show a kit that includes a master install kit specifically for a 2 series carrier. So do i order the specific gears and order a master install kit seperate, and is there any difference between the master install kits? thanks again

There is a link to Jaws Gear. I got my 4.10 gears from him, i just haven't had a shop be able to squeeze me in for an install yet. I also have a A4 like you. Jeff is a great guy and will get you your gears fast. On that link, click Gear Cut: Thick Gear (+15.00), Gear Ratio: 3.73, Installation Kit: Master Timken Kit ($82.00). That's what i got except i got 4.10's.
The thick gear will take care of your 2 series carrier and that install kit is a good one to get.

Or you could do the same thing but with the standard Motive gears. He doesn't offer Strange gears. For Strange gears, you'd have to go to Thunder Racing. I would suggest Motive Performance or Strange.

I bought the Motive 2 series, posi additive (not needed, but got it anyways) and the install brought me out to $355. Had my old tuner recalibrate my gears for me at no charge. Picked up 7 tenths with a 20 degree drop from the last time at the track. Went from 2.73's to 3.73's just like you, 98 TA. Mine have some whine to them, but half of what my old Motive 4.10's had.

The Master Install Kit is not a MUST have but would be very well advised. You don't have to have it, though, if you think your rear end is solid as is. It's your choice.
As far as the Royal Purple, it already has limited slip additive in it. I would run the GM gear oil and GM additive, though.

Yes they would re-use all of your stock shims and bearings if you did not purchase a master install kit. If you had an install kit, they would replace them with the new bearings, shims and washers that you purchased in the kit.
It would be worth it to rebuild it while you already have it opened up to save a rebuild later on. Getting the Master Install Kit, as well as a proper break in, would prolong the life of the rear end.

We have the thick gears in stock and ready to ship. Your stock shims will NOT be the same for the aftermarket gears. There will need to be adjustments made. I HIGHLY recommed the Master Install Kit unless you have less than 40K miles on your car.

I bought my gears from Jaw Gears..Jeff is great guy..Awesome service..I had 2:73's got 3"73's Motive Performance.Jeff will tell you what you need and hook you up..Get the master install kit too..Trust me on this..Don't be cheap..Find a shop that knows their stuff! I did it the cheap way and 3 sets of gears later, they are damn near quiet. You will love the 3:73's..
