Default Is it even possible to make 4.10s in a 10 bolt quiet?

I first bought a used set of GM 4.10s and they whined under a load so then I bought a new set of motive 4.10s and they whine under decell. I even had a guy install the motives for me that has done many gear swaps with no problem. Just today I got done putting the GM gears back in and set them and they still make noise. Just wondering is it even possible to make the 4.10 quiet or am I just fighting a no win war against it?

i got the aam gm 4.10 gear with master install kit from speed inc, and i will let you know after 3 track days. Lots of beating on it on the street still no noise. I have gone 1.8 60's on 10.5 et streets when i was na, now that im turbo i just spin 1/2. I no longer want the 4.10's, but am going to buy a 9 inch, so no point to put a diff gear in the 10 bolt.

Ive never done a gear before just followed keliente's how to, and got it done with no noise, prolly 4,000 miles on them.

Just wondering what pinion shim and how much backlash did you end up with?

Oh ya its very possible to make them dead quiet. You just need to take it to a guy who is worth a **** for setting them up. I have motive performance 4.10s and there is one tiny spot that you can barely hear them but you really hafta be listening for them. Im very happy with them so far. As far as backlash is concerned im not sure what he put them at. Ill hafta ask him

yea that's probably my problem. Like I said I put the GM 4.10s in again and they still whined so by the time I was done I just said screw it and put my stockers back in for now. I drive it on alot of trips so really I guess the 3.42 is better anyway. Maybe sometime this summer I may take it to Ammco transmissions and have them install a set of 3.73s

Well technically gm gears should be the quietest gears out of all of them. And having 4.10s and long trips is perfectly fine. At 70mph im only pulling 1900rms, and at 80 its a 2200. So you really shouldnt notice much if any difference in gas mileage. But from everything that i have heard on this site its pretty much not worth the time and money going from 3.42s to 3.73s. Just not a big enough jump in ratios. Now that i have 4.10s and i really dont have any problems with just spinning the tires at WOT im kinda wishing i went with a 4.30 or lower.
