Default Diagnosis on higher RPM skipping

I am completely stumped at this point about what could be wrong with my buddies 2002 A4 Z28.

Modifications include:
Long Tubes
UD Pulley
ORY with a bullet turned down
Tuned by a very reputable local tuner
Lid

Here's the problem - at 5K RPM under full throttle in 2nd and 3rd gears the car misses, skips, backfires. I have replaced or swapped parts off of friends cars trying to narrow this down.

We have replaced or swapped - Plugs, wires, checked pushrods, checked valve springs, cleaned MAF, swapped PCM from another 02 car, checked grounds, pulled power fuse out of recently installed sound system, and swapped injectors.

WHAT COULD IT BE!!!!!!!

The only thing I've narrowed it back down to is a wiped cam lobe but would hate to pull the motor apart just to find a perfect cam....

Help.... please!

Check to see if your getting any knock-retard or detonation.
