I believe your car only has to be legal where its registered. Meaning if there is no smog laws in Mexico then your good on everything. Just gotta say your visiting here or something of that nature so they don't start giving you too much ****.

Sure they can. Your car can only be registered out of state for 20 days before you have to register it in state.

So if a cop sees you twice you're toast.

So you cant say your "visiting" for a period of time and that you have a house in Cali and Mexico and you flew to Mexico and drove back in your Camaro for a road trip and that you'll be driving back to Mexico in a few months? lol (long *** excuse/lie)

You can always join the military. My cars are all registered in Oklahoma. The way it works with us is if the car is in California you are required to conform to the california vehicle laws I.E. tint, basic smog which is not as in depth as the smog check that they do for registration, and all mods have to have a carb #. But your less likely to get hassled if you have out of state plates....

camarossls12001: where are you located in ca and where are you from in oklahoma? i had to have mine smogged for a base decal here in 29 palms, but i was ok because it was stock back then. i have tinted windows and open headers right now, but have never gotten hassled for anything. i know people who have around the San Bernardino area, but not out here.

Fact or fiction? Fiction, the only used vehicles that can be legally imported into Jalisco Mexico are used vehicles that are made in 1998. Pickup trucks that are 1993-1998 can also be imported as used commercial vehicles.

In order for a used vehicle to be registered in Jalisco Mexico, the used vehicle first must be thoroughly inspected at the border by Mexican customs, then imported legally into Mexico, pay the import tax which is @ $1500 US dollars, then drive the vehicle all the way to Jalisco so it can be verified once again before being issued Jalisco Mexico plates.

Yes, and whoever is registering the vehicle in Mexico must have a Mexican drivers license. Both owner and used vehicle must be present in order for the vehicle to be registered in Jalisco.

Yes, true, any vehicle with a 17 digit vin can be insured through Hagerty, Esurance, Progressive, AIS, or AAA Insurance.

Nice... thinking out of the box, it is very very expensive to register your vehicle in Jalisco Mexico. And, this would only make sense if you had plenty of time, money and had the proper connections in Mexico to pull this off.

Let me further explain. In Mexico there are 2 types of registration, fronterizo (border reg) and nacional (national reg) a fronterizo is only allowed to drive within the border regions of Mexico, a nacional vehicle has free access throughout Mexico.

Nacional vehicles are highly sought after due to the higher resale value, because a fronterizo vehicle cannot be registered in a non-border state.
Nacional vehicles can be legally driven, sold and operated in any of Mexico's 31 states. Where fronterizo vehicles cannot.

You can also register your vehicle in a (fronterizo) Mexican border state, if your vehicle is 2003 or older. It still costs @ 1500 US dollars to register, but you wouldn't have to drive all the way to Jalisco. As a fronterizo vehicle, you can argue that your family lives in Mexico and you work here. That is a valid argument.

Because the fronterizo vehicle is registered in another country (Mexico) and not another state, the California registration requirement isn't strongly enforced because most Mexican vehicles are not DOT compliant. And, therefor, cannot be registered in California.

***Notes****

Any type of used vehicle registration in Mexico requires heavy tipping, you will have to tip a lot of people to make this happen, the customs broker, the inspector, the verifier, and the officer that signs and finally stamps/approves your importation packet.

Please keep in mind that most good roads or highways in Mexico are toll roads, and when driving on toll roads, the tolls quickly add up to a lot of money.

If you calculate the $2.50/gallon of Mexican gasoline it offsets to the same price we pay here to use the USA freeways which are not all that free when you calculate our state, federal taxes on fuel, registration and then state sales tax.

Sooner or later, all of us on the left coast, with newer cars, will have to deal with the smog man, whether the post is boring or not, the issue is still the same, what to do?
