Default Question for guys running over a 300 shot...

Is it necessary to have oversized head studs put in? Let's say a wanted a 400 shot, and had a perfect tune for it. What kinds of modifications are necessary to the block to run these large shots?

I will be running a large shot and went with the big studs. The cylinder pressures will be insane with that big of a hit.Even with a perfect tune the cylinder pressure will want to lift the heads.I did it for extra insurance.O-ringed block and copper gaskets are necessary for that much spray.

Sounds good. BTW, who makes copper gaskets for the LS1?

i dont think you need over sized head studs but regular head studs from ARP will be fine. also o ringing the block and copper head gaskets is a must over 250 or so. and please dont do this with stock internals. special pistons and good rods are also a must. the stock crank should take the abuse fine. also you will need to spray it through a direct port system and not the intake or you will lean some cyliners out.

I have a feeling its not going to be anything close to stock internals, or stock cubes :p

Regular ARP studs will not hold. I think I'm going with the 9/16" studs if the deal goes through. Anybody know who makes a copper gasket for a 4.030" bore?

Let's say a wanted a 400 shot
is all I can say....gimee a second....

....ok....damn Ryan...yah, I'd go w/larger diameter studs(for insureance), billet main caps, O-ring it, and use the CG's.

Still not convinced that even with 9/16" studs and rings you won't lift a head after the first 1/2 dozen hits after seeing what Bille's did w/good studs/rings and just a lil'( ) boost('member?), but I'm sure it's been done. As said, CP's are gonna be way up there.

Don't recall anyone snapping a stock crank, but don't recall anyone hittin' one w/a 400 shot either. I'd be tempted to step up....

Damn son...4.030" hole...200 off the pad...200 at the 300' sounds like a woody to me

***...on a side note, I found the gremlin in the pewter pig..pulling the motor this weekend I love a good excuse

Keep us updated on the build up

I think it will hold if you set it up right. If you hit a 400 right at 3000 rpm it probably wont hold. But if you do 200 shot at 3000 rpm and another 200 at 4900rpm or something similiar., or even a progressive. It might hold. Im running a 300 shot for a total of 707 rwhp. But I limit the Tq by using a two stage system to around 750 ft/lbs max.

the GM copper gaskets work fine for a 4.03 bore. i can get them new from work if you need a set. thats what im using on mine. i think Al's right, it's just a matter of keeping it together the Dynamic compression is whats going to be the show stopper here.

and where are you guys getting these 9/16's studs?

Good tip Al, about limiting the torque. I'll definitely be using Loc-wire copper gaskets. Someone on here was trying to get some custom 9/16" studs from ARP, but I dunno what happened to that, so looks like the 1/2" is gonna have to work.
Vince, you will be hearing from me when I need the gaskets, Thanks man
Mike B, spill the beans on the gremlin. I'll be charging $100 a ride when it's finished

i really think that the ARP half's will be fine. the guy that started all this head gasket lifting paranioa was in the 1000 RWHP range, and i personally dont expect to eclipse 800 w/ my DP setup (well, not yet ). and maybe you guys do thats why you're worried about it.

No way I'll be pushing 1000, but I like a little bit of overkill.

Check with ARE, they can get you the copper gaskets, O ring your block, and hook you up on the bigger head studs.

Yep, I'll be calling ARE for a set of their studs. Block will already have receiver grooves.

I will be dissapointed if I don't see at least 950-1000 rwhp .IMO someone running that much spray is asking for trouble with the 1/2 inch studs. It may stay together but for how long.

I wouldn't worry about the power as much as I would putting it to the ground and going down the track, that would be my main concern as the 1/2" studs and cometic steel shim graskets will hold just fine..Make sure you follow tq specs when bolting up the heads as ARP gives this info and check them often....
