It's just what it does. I don't have a legit reason as to why, but it's a known issue.

factory our cars come with a plastic gear that strips out . the wotor on the lights actually pulls a little more than it should to know the lights are up all the way . this is what causes the plactic gear to mess up . someone on here has metal gears that do not strip or you can use the manual adjust to rotate the gear to the side that is not used but it may eventually fail .

It is not the headlight motor! it is just a little nylon plastic gear inside of the motor. you can just replace it with a brass. all your problems will disappear when that is fixed

Your motor isn't bad, just the gear like everyone is saying. When you hit the key fob (or locking the doors then shutting the doors, activating the alarm automaticly) and the headlight isn't down in it's locked position because it's stripped out. It cause the heads lights to act like they have a mind of there own like that. I had the same problem and just replaced the gear with brass ones and now they are fine. Still have the same motors that came with the car. You can replace the motor if you want to, but it will fail later on in the same manner. Buddy of mine replaced the motor and it came right back in about 2 weeks. Not saying it didn't fix it, but it may happen again with a new motor.
What I've learned is to be going AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE when opening headlights on a TA. When my gears first started going bad a long time ago, I noticed that if I was going 45 or faster then my headlight would have trouble opening with the bad gear, but would pop right up if I was going slower. There should be a sticky for this, if not there should be one. This is one of the most commonly asked questions with 4th Gen TAs.
