Default REV-1116 springs...what's the verdict on these?

I'm planning to buy a Thunder 224/224 .561/.561 114 cam and was wondering which springs to run.

I'm really leaning toward double springs, which (since I don't have money for headwork) would mean the REV-1116s. This is for two reasons: security (if the outer breaks, the inner will keep me from dropping a valve) and longevity (I don't drive the car hard and don't want to have to change springs every year or two).

What's everyone's take on these springs, now that they've been out for a while? Are they a quality product?

Thanks.

I've had em on my car with the g5x-2 for a while now and haven't had any problems. They aren't very loud either, at least not to me. I haven't ever heard of one breaking yet. They are definately a quality spring.

Can you install it on stock heads w/o machining? That was my main reason for considering the REVs. Also, how does it compare price-wise?

Thanks

How do you know they are better than the REV Springs? Have you tested them?

Yes it is the new Crane doubles. They are a drop-in with no machine work required.Yes we have done quite a bit of testing here on those on the bench and on the engine dyno with great results. They will handle more lift and high revs much better. The complete set is $378 which includes springs, titanium retainers, seats, and valve stem seals. We do have them in stock at this time but they are not on the website.

Thanks, just what I wanted to know. One more question though, somebody here locally has tested 3 sets and swears they are just their regular Chevy small block springs with a new retainer. Not that that's a bad thing but they do call them "new"...are they a new design or rebadged?

PS: Also what spring seats are you including? are they crane? (hardened?) I don't see any mention of them in their literature. Can stock seats and stock seals be used for 2001 and older? I just don't want to buy what I don't really need. TIA

Well I really don't know for sure. Crane says they are new and it is a new part number so who really know. Either way they fit the bill and should be a very good spring. With all the REVs breaking and valve floating they've got to be better.

I thought the 918s are garbage since Comp Cams does not have any quality control...there are at least two batches of junk springs that are known at this time...see Pro Stock John;s alert at the begining of this forum.

I have not heard about many REVs breaking or floating... I know thay are pricy...however...

you all just told me a month ago that the rev springs were great springs, so which is it? i hope you wern't just pedaling a product to get me to spend $351 with you. either way they're holding up fine for now, but i've only got 2,000 miles on them. i'm not going to be real thrilled if they end up breaking and i have to buy another set of seats and retainers.

I'm not sure who you talked to so I don't know what they've told you. The REV springs are okay springs but I've started seeing more failures on the board lately. We've ALWAYS recommended the Comp 918s over the REVs, and still do. NOW there is a new and better drop-in double available for the customer that has to have a double. It's like computers sometimes, by the time you get it home it's outdated.

Paul, still wondering if new seats and seals are required for 2001 and older applications that already have the separate seat and seal.

Dave, new seats and seals are required. Everything is replaced, except the stock locks.

On 2001 and down u dont need to replace seats and seal,Only on the 2002 head.
Thats according to Cranes site.

The Revs are fine for 6500 and so is the 918 but these Cranes do seem alittle better.
