Default Building my own rear mount setup

Hi guys, I was thinking of building a rear mount turbo setup for my otherwise stock '02 SS. I have a nice T76 laying around. I can't remember the exhaust A/R right offhand but it's in the .80 / .90 range. I was just wondering if this turbo will spool reasonably quickly in a rear mount setup? Second, how much boost can I reasonably run on a stock motor without detonation on 93 octane pump gas? I plan to run water/alky injection.

Thanks!

P.S. I'm running a stock 4L60E at the moment but plan to upgrade to a built TH400 w/ 4000 stall very soon.

About 14 psi if your a decent tuner. I run 317 heads, mls gasket, arp 12 pt studs on stock engines. A good idea is to swap in a zo6 cam at the same time.

Coat and wrap it, and a 82 housing 76 will spool decent esspecially with a auto and stall. I would tighten the stall though, with boost it will push through the advertised stall by 1000 + rpm.

8-9psi should get you an easy 500+rwhp...I wouldnt go over that on a stock motor just because i'd like it to last a little while (stock pistons and rod bolts suck ***). Also make sure your charge pipe is about 2.25" or 2.5" all the way to the front i made a rear mount setup with a small charge pipe and it made crappy power;re-did all the charge pipe and BAM, 533rwhp@9psi. Also make sure your exhaust going to the turbo is 2.5" to speed up velocity and keep heat transfer up. If you run 3" y pipe and to the turbo it will take forever to spool up so just run 2.5" - Those are a couple of the major pointers i would keep an eye on, other than that, the T76 should do well but might be a tiny bit laggy in a rear mount configuration. Good luck!!!

My 98 has been pretty well set on 14 psi (atleast 10) for 2 .5 years now. Intercooled, and water meth. I had the 76 on , and have a 72 on it now. I put he 76 on the 99 which is also a stock bottom end car.

You could do a very low dollar set of twins......I just finished a twined c5 that is very very very very low budget.

Sweet! I never would have imagined that anyone could get away with 14 psi on a stock 10:1 bottom end, even with methanol, but that's good to hear. 500-550 rwhp would be plenty for me, at least for a long time. (We all know how that works, too much is never enough!) I do have an aftermarket standalone installed already so tuning isn't a problem.

1320: Cheap twins is an option too, it's just that I'd rather use the 76 if it'll work well since it's just sitting there collecting dust. This converter I'm using is actually rated for 4000 stall behind a big block so I figure it will be about right on a boosted LS1. It's a switch pitch converter so there is also a low stall mode for cruising. I have a couple cans of some Tech Line thermal coating that I can do the pipes with.
