Hello everyone, i'm new here. I've been lurking for awhile but have been looking to buy a Camaro. I'm currently looking at a '98 SS camaro, and i just want to make sure i don't get ripped off. What are all of the ways that you can tell you are getting a genuine SS? I know of the WU8 RPO code, but what other ways are there to tell if that sticker happens to be missing? Any advice that anyone can offer would be extremely helpful! Thanks!

Check the VIN with SLP.

I did try to call SLP, however i think it was too late in the day and they were closed. I'm assuming that's a sure-fire way of guaranteeing its a genuine SS?

Go to a dealer service dept with the vin. Have them print out all the RPO codes and the descriptions of them. I don't know about '98 but in later years the codes are WU8 and Y2Y.
Heres a Z28 RPO list

Check the drivers side door and among the codes listed look for WU8 that is the GM option code for all SS's

That's a good quick way of doing it, but there's still a chance that the door was swapped with an SS door/door sticker, along with the other SS stuff. Calling SLP with the VIN is the only way to be sure, and they'll give you the build number as well.

Ditto on the call to SLP with the vin#. I did it. I wasn't sure on mine when I was going to buy it because there wasn't a door sticker. SLP is very helpful!

Well... As far as I remember, the RPO sticker also has the VIN #, so in that case, the person doing that would've needed to do a lot of other stuff, too.

Yea if people would look at the pics I posted you might notice there is a VIN on it too. Make sure the VIN matches the plate under the windshield.
The only SS cars that got SLP stickers are ones with SLP options.
My car has the minimum to make it an SS so it has no SLP installed options so it has no SLP sticker.
And I did call SLP and get the build number and in/out dates.

Thank you everyone for all of the advice and help. I just got back from looking at the car and it does have the door jamb sticker. It has the WU8 RPO code followed by the Z28 one, but no Y2Y one, so that means it just doesn't have any SLP options, correct? I didnt even think to match the VIN on the sticker with the one in the window, but i will definately do that before cash changes hands, and i will also call SLP with the VIN to check. Would SLP still have it registered even if i dont have the Y2Y RPO code?
EDIT: I can't seem to find the rest of the VIN on the stickers in the pictures posted. I see the first 8 digits of the vin, but where are the other 9?
Thanks!

I chose to remove the last 9 digits of my vin's from the stickers. (only in the pictures)
The Y2Y RPO code seems quite mysterious, and everyone has their own rumor about what they heard it means.
I just read up on it because of this post, what I read is that Y2Y was put on cars that were sent to SLP for additional upgrades NOT JUST THE BASIC SS STUFF.
But my car has the Y2Y code, no SLP stickers, and no additional SLP content.

Hmmm... I didn't see the pics when I posted earlier, but can see them now. Weird...
The Y2Y definetely is an interesting one since not all cars have it. Nevertheless, as long as you have the WU8 on the RPO sticker that has a VIN # that matches the one on the windshield, you can be quite confident that you have found the real thing.

I edited the post to show the pics.
