My HVAC system seems to not be working correctly/efficently in my 01 SS. The a/c and heater works but not when I switch the fan switch to the highest setting (all the way to the right). I checked all the fuses and everything looks cool. Why is it that my hvac system only works on low settings? Is there an electrical short or something?

Any input/suggestions is definetely appreciated. I don't know much when it comes to this kind of stuff and would like to get this problem resolved ASAP...

what exactly isn't working. does it not blow air? is the air not cold/hot? does the direction of the air change/not change (like you have it on the floor setting but it blows on the defroster)?

NO air blows out at all. It doesnt matter if I am trying to use the AC or defroster, no air blows out when I turn it on the high setting.

It could be that the switch is burned out on the higher setting or the fan needs to be replaced. I've has both happen on older f-bods.

Yea I have problems with mine too. It won't blow a/c through vents. Only blows through defrost and floor. But heat. Heat blows wherever I put it for a minute or two then only blows out the dash vents. When it does that I turn it off and I hear it hissing sounds like it's release pressure. I'm not too sure. I've changed the switch and i've checked the vacuum resevoir and the little black circular thing that 3 lines hook upto.

But it's prolly a vacuum leak somewhere as is yours I agree it might be your fan or the switch.

i get that hissing sound you are referring to when i switch the fan from low to high setting when it turns off. i know exactly what you are talking about.

hopefully someone can shed some light on how to fix these problems...

now my air turns on and off when i have the switch turned on, it doesnt matter if i have the ac, fan, or heater on. still, i am not getting any air at all when the fan switch is on the highest setting. when the ac is on and it does come on, the air is ice cold and vice versa with the heat.

so, i dont think its specifically an ac or temp problem. its got to be something to do with the compressor or whatnot. however, i dont know **** about how our hvac system works so i am clueless.

i am the kind of guy that doesnt like taking my car to any shops and i prefer to do everything myself. can anyone point me in the right direction to troubleshooting this issue? if not, i may have to bite the bullet and take it to an auto air condition place or something...

It sounds like it could possibly be an open circuit in your stepped resistor for the blower motor or it could just be the switch itself. Im not sure where to find the stepped resistor exactly on an F-Body but I do know it is somewhere down stream from the blower motor itself. When you find the resistor you can test it with an ohmmeter or you can just look at it to see if one of its coils is broken.

Check the I/P-1 fuse in the underhood fuse block. If its ok, take out the blower motor relay and switch it with another relay in the fuse box. I'd put money on it being a bad relay. When you are on max setting for the blower the power doesnt run through the blower resistor....only the relay.

if the fan doesnt run at all in one position it may be the blower resistor, occasionally they burn out killing one or more fan position and eventually all of them.
also many times when the blower resistor goes out the high speed setting goes first
