I have a solid roller nitrous 402 with a relatively large lift/duration (.700+, 270+).

I have all of my rockers set to the correct lash, around .020.

With my aluminum valve covers on, valvetrain sounds very loud (like shaking a tin can of rocks). The rockers do not contact the covers in any way.

When the valve covers are off - minimal noise.

Do you guys experience the same with your valvecovers on/ off? My theory is that the aluminum covers carry the sound differently, but I just want a little peice of mind.

Yep. We finished our vette and I feel like racing again so we will get it out.

Just want to click off some 8's if possible, then put our real motor in it.

are you SURE the rockers aren't contacting the covers? look for dings, etc on the rockers and the covers. Otherwise just roll with it, my solid cam sounds like a sewing machine at idle with the covers on.

i run a solid roller in the race car. it does sound like a sewing machine, but i really cant hear it due to lack of exhaust. if nothing is hitting and valves are adjusted good i wouldnt sweat it. it might just be the aluminum magnifing all the other valvetrain noise...

Correct push rod length? Pull a rocker on the intake and exhaust and check the wear pattern and see how it is lined up on the valve.

Checked it and good to go.

No dings on valvecovers.....the aluminum definately amplifies the sound greatly.

Maybe a video would help, depends on how loud you think loud is for valve train, a solid roller is going to produce more noise than a hydraulic roller.

I doubt there is a problem with it.. The stock valvetrain on these cars is loud as hell so I'm sure a solid roller setup would sound even worse.. The yella terra rockers on my 402 sound like ****.. I've got jessels on my 408 and it sounds as quiet as a church mouse even better than stock rockers. I say LET IT EAT!!!

Honestly my old solid roller 414 (iron block) was amazingly quiet in the valvetrain, T&D rockers and 3/8 pushrods. Even with a fairly quiet exhaust the valvetrain was quieter then a lot of hydraulic LS1 cars I had.

Maybe some of it was the iron block but it was a lot quieter then my old solid roller big blocks with mufflers. If nothing is hitting and the geometry is correct what can you do except run it..

Mine's no louder than stock that I can tell. Similar cam specs as you, jessel rockers, carbon fiber valvecovers.

Are you checking the lash hot?

kp - I think you are right....I can't find anything wrong with it so we'll take it to the dyno and check it out, then hit the tracks.

WM - Yes, checking last hot. What lash are you running on your setup?

Mine made hella noise but my valve covers were hitting. I have Jezels with 3/8 PR. I ground down my valve covers and it got pretty quite. My headers are so loud, you can't hear to much else.

If all looks well, then you just need to run it.

Hard to tell the noise on the C5-R but this was with a Jesel rocker on a 29X/29X @ .050 .917/.888 lift cam.

I have the Jesel C5R Pro Series rockers, 7/16 pushrods, aluminium C5R valve covers. I am surprised how quiet the valvetrain is. I'm not running alot of lift though 276/290 .747/.770. My vette with a hydraulic cam is way louder. Just make sure nothing is making contact inside the valve covers, check your lash hot and your good to go. Lash on my setup is .021 cold/.025 hot.
