Default New rear main seal...worth it?

I bought a Federal Mogul rear main seal, not only does it not look the same as the original and I dont know which way it goes in, but Ive been reading too many horror stories of people leaking more oil after the new seal than they did with the old original seal.

What would you do?

I'm in the same boat. I'm in the middle of a clutch/slave cylinder job on my '99
SS and I thought replacing the rear seal would be a good idea (58K miles).
After reading all the horror stories, I think I might just leave it all alone. What did you wind up doing with yours?

Do the freaking rear main seal!!!!!! I put my mcleod street twin in then 3mths later the pcv clogged and blew out the weakest point, the rear main. Double check and make sure its the right seal for your car, a lot of seals look different but perform the same. Change the seal so your clutch doesn't slip and slip

Change the seal or you'll be kicking yourself in the *** when the old one starts leaking

I'd buy an OEM seal. I have installed several, actually my wife does it with her nails. I do not use the install tool.

Thanks for the advice. I installed the new seal this afternoon with just my nails. It looks seated evenly all around. Hopefully, no leaks..

I ended up replacing the seal and what do you know, now I have a leak in my brand new built motor. It isnt as bad now that I put a breather in my oil fill cap, but still is more than it should be.

I dont know if the crankcase pressure would of caused the old one to leak as bad or worse, but I guess Ill never know.
