What is it, like an hour and a half drive from Madison to Racine, if you go slow? WTF, it's like they're taking the "tour" out of Power Tour.

Let's face it, the power tour is more about the 'power sponsors marketing campaign tour' anymore. Granted I only went in 2006, but my Dad went with me in 06 and again in 07 and he even said that it was getting more and more commercialized.
They cut down on the driving because they want you at the venues as soon as possible so the vendors can peddle as much as possible.

Fuel prices may have a little to do with it too. Shorter PT=more cars and less fuel used by sponsors also.

I kindly disagree as there were more cars this year then the years before. Gas prices do not effect the majority of people on Power Tour.

I never heard anyone bitch about gas prices during the entire trip. Pretty amazing considering we spoke to thousands of car enthusiasts. Several people, like myself, consider Power Tour as one of their definite yearly vacations. You just plan around the costs, just like having to buy a plane ticket to go elsewhere. Everyone was in a good mood, the tour rocked!

I agree, other than a few off hand comments, gas was never a topic. Certainly not an issue for me. Gas got cheaper as I headed east :D

I agree fuel prices may not have had an effect this year, because most people had already made plans to go months ago. But next year when fuel is $5.00 a gallon and after seeing there VISA bill for the 2008 Tour, they may think twice if it is a long route for 2009. And I personally know of alot of us Minnesotains(big hot rod area) went only because it was in our area. If you looked at licence plates there were a large percent from Minnesota.

Well first of all, gas prices NEXT year will be much lower IMO but regardless I DO THINK gas proes may have had an effect this year on the NUMBER of long haulers and also on the number of stops the short haulers made. Did anyone get a count on the long haulers THIS year vs. last year???

I would agree. If people have to save up all year to do Power Tour, that's what they do. They will do whatever it takes to go on the Tour, regardless of what gas prices do.
BTW: Tony, I didn't realize that was you we were hanging out with in Lincoln. Sorry I didn't recognize you earlier! :emb: :jest:

Everyone posting here is not getting what I am saying. There most likely is more people than you "talked too"(because they weren't there) that decided not to do Power Tour because of fuel prices. Or did a shorter part of it, Like my bunch did. If Fuel was still cheap, There would have been even more cars, or Long Haulers. So, if they made a shorter route, it may attract even more cars than past years because now they can afford the whole trip. I would have loved to do the whole thing along with my friends and family, but none of us could afford that.

The whole point of the Power TOUR is the journey. I think this year's tour was great in terms of miles covered. In '05, there were a couple of days that we went more than 300 miles. Those were long days.
I think complaining about the price of gas for a vacation that's centered around driving is pointless. Look at it this way, I drove 2495 miles and used 112 gallons of gas. 112 gallons at $4/gal is $448. If gas were, say, $2.50/gal, the total would be $280. A difference of $168. At what price per gallon would you do the Long Haul?

Forget it, I am not complaining about gas prices!!! I was trying to say simply- IF IT WAS SHORTER THERE MAY BE NEW PEOPLE! Thats it. I am most likely doing the long haul next year only because it is in my part of the country. If it was Florida to Nevada next year I would not go. That equals less money spent for me personally. And this is not the only vacation I would be taking, I already do other things every year so my vacation money gets split up. I had a great time this first time (it beats the hell out of Car Craft Summer Cruise).

Enjoy it while you can..before it's legislated out of exsistence for making too big of a "carbon footprint"..& no,the price of gas will not be any cheaper next year, not unless the economy totally collapses(Obama), or they start drilling..(McCain)
I remember I spent something like $300 bucks in fuel for PT 2006...I knew then that was going to be my only shot..Oil was $50-60 a barrel back then.
-They need one last "hurrah!" & take the route from the end of where ever it ended this year & take it back to LA where it started in 1995 & be done with it.

Well, the '08 Tour had the most registrations making it the biggest Power Tour ever. I would say the formula is working.
How many Tours have you done? What first hand experience are you basing your opinion on? I don't think I've ever heard a Long Hauler say that they wish the Tour was shorter. If it's too many miles for you, don't do the whole thing. Don't try to change an event that doesn't need changing.
We Midwesterners got off easy. Tony and Grey had a 21 hour drive to get home. I'm sure there were others that had just as far, if not farther, to get back home.

And I agree, I wish they would go some place new, the same old places are getting boring. I think the phrase is "go west"!!! The weather would have to be better, and there's alot of places they haven't been yet.

This was my 6th Long Haul. I did it in 2002,3,4,5,6,8. Skipped '07 for our wedding and honeymoon (PT wasn't relaxing enough for a honeymoon.) I am disappointed with the route seeming quite similar in the past 2 years and not a whole lot different in 09 from what it looks like so far. I think we are going to start doing it every other year.
I am bummed that I missed 2000 and 2001. Power Tour was 10 days then! 2000 went from San Bernadino, CA to Panama City Beach FL. 2001 was Pontiac, MI to San Bernadino, CA running on or near Route 66. Those would have been awesome! Being a Long Hauler REALLY meant something then!! One day I will travel Route 66 to California, but by the time I can most of the historic sites may be gone :(
I certainly understand shortening it some and making it 7 days, but I'd like to see other parts of the country other than the midwest, I lived in the Chicago area for 32 years until moving to NC.
I drove about 3700 miles doing the Long Haul this year and spent $580 on gas... not too bad I don't think. I'm sure many people spent more than double that. I could not afford to take my Chevelle SS454 on the Power Tour even though I'd love to.

gas prices are not going to be the major factor with us. we will likely tow the car to the power tour then drive the power tour, then tow the car back. should be interesting, the car will have a 454 LSX and 4.71 rear gear with 4L80e in it.....
we will spend way more in diesel fuel than gas lol

It's doubtful the Power Tour will go anywhere but the Midwest, East, and South because the population is located there. The Tour wants to stay in regions where major venues are with-in 250 miles of one another.
Below is an exact quote of David Freiburger, ex Hot Rod Magazine Editor:
"I obviously don't work there any more and anything I say about it cannot be deemed official, but the population density is in the Midwest and the cities are closer together. So I doubt you'll see the PT come all the way west any time soon."
And another Freiburger comment to a poster who wrote:
"Loved the tours did two partial legs and one whole tour it was great. But I'm not going again till it goes west of texas, col. or south/ north dakota"
and Freiburger responds... "Then I guess you're never going to do it again."
I did the 2008 Tour as a Long Hauler and spent nearly $800 in fuel.....I'll do it again too. Also have done previous tours in 2003 & 2004.

We just got the hot rod magazine in the mail today! I was looking for the 2009 Route...did I miss it? Is anything official? My husband's 52 Chevy 2 1/2 ton is barely seen at the dealership in IA..but we were excited. We made it as long haulers truly and was an experience to remember.

I am starting now to plan my trip with my dad and brothers. We probably will take my WS6 because i can get 30+mpg on the highway, and It is just cool:secret2:.
My round trip from my house out there, and back home came out to approx 2,517 mi – about 1 day 19 hours
Thought i would share this
Total Tour Driving Time 1,180 mi – about 20 hours 58 mins
Day 1 - Madison, WI to Racine WI = 107 mi – about 2 hours 1 min
Day 2 - Racine, WI to South Bend IN = 170 mi – about 3 hours 9 mins
Day 3 - South Bend, IN to Warren MI = 225 mi – about 3 hours 25 mins
Day 4 - Warren, MI to Columbus Oh = 220 mi – about 3 hours 58 mins
Day 5 - Columbus Oh to Somerset KY = 266 mi – about 4 hours 27 mins
Day 6 - Somerset, KY to Bristol TN = 193 mi – about 3 hours 59 mins
Day 7 - Bristol, TN
I google mapped all the locations to see approx miles to get an idea on how much this would cost me. This might save some people time and give them a idea.
I have been wanting to go on the power tour since i was 15 and i never was able to because my high school finals were always the same week of the tour, now since im in college i am done over a month sooner and Me and my dad said once i am in college that year we will go and do it no matter where it was at.

Your travel times did not calculate the real time that driving in a very large caravan will take...you will go through small towns and small cities some will take longer than others ... the point is to relax and enjoy seeing the good ol USA...most of the tour will be on two lane highways not on the interstate ... I mean how many Waffel Houses and Stuckey's do you really want to see ... :D

I respectfully disagree that there are more hot rodders out there. In So. Cal. you can't drive for five minutes without seeing some kind of hot rod, and that is day or night. Also you always see pics from the Power Tour of rain, we don't get that much out here. And lastly this is where Hot Rod is headquartered and the first Power Tours started here, I say bring it back for at least one year I would love to go! Just can't take off 21/2 weeks to do it when it is in the midwest.

So cal was a hot bed of hot rodding in the 50s and 60s but things have changed dude..the mid west, east, and southeast is where its at now days...check how many NHRA nationals there are out west compared to the rest of the country ... population will tell you the story..just check the electorial votes from the rescent prez election which are determined by the population of the state and that will tell you where the poplation lives...out side of cali the rest of the west has very low population..and cities are a long distance from each other... when they are more than 200 miles a part you spend too much of the day driving and not enough at the cruise in site....if you really want to go on the tour load up and go...I hung out with a guy from seattle, washington on the 06 tour and he drove from seattle to orlando, florida to get on the tour and long hauled the tour ... I see a number of people who come from canada every year to do the tour ...did you know there are people who come from other countries (european and australia for example) to participate and there are people from cali that fly in and get a rent a car and do the tour..I am sure that the tour will make it back out there to cali sometime..in the meantime I will continue to run it as long as it is on the east side of the rocky mountains...there is too much traffic in cali for me .. :D

..and cities are a long distance from each other... when they are more than 200 miles a part you spend too much of the day driving and not enough at the cruise in site....
This is true, but it takes 5 or 6 hours to go 200 miles. And now they just zig-zag you all around so it takes 5 or 6 hours to go 50 miles!:eyes:

This is true, but it takes 5 or 6 hours to go 200 miles. And now they just zig-zag you all around so it takes 5 or 6 hours to go 50 miles!:eyes:
Like I said if you are going to travel more than a couple of hundred miles there is too much time spent on the road and not enough time at the cruise in site..thank you for your help emphisizing what I had posted...the majority of the tour is on 2 lane highways to see the good ol USA up close instead of the bland mile after mile of dull interstate highways featuring endless views of waffle houses and stuckeys ... if they wanted to race to the next stop they would stay on the interstate ... this is a cruise not a race ..
PS FYI ... if you do not wish to travel with the caravan you can do some real "power touring" on your own..I usually do a little of that when I get tired of the cruise with the caravan..I have beaten the lead GM caravan vehicle to the next city numerous times over the years..but being part of the caravan is a big part of the tour experience and I always enjoy it...variety is the spice of life.

Yeah, I guess I'm just tired of seeing this particular part of the country! I just want to go somewhere new. Interstates are kinda boring, that is true , but there's ways to make it interesting. I think it was in 2000, that I caught up with the tour in Tucumcari, New Mexico and was behind the Rad Rides by Troy guys on I-54 going into Texas. The two cars I remember following were "Bisquick" and "Intruder". And if they were'nt doing 100 plus mph, they were sitting still! Now that was fun! :D But.... I'll keep going, what the hell, maybe I'll go into Canada when it's in Detroit like I did in 2001, but then again maybe not. When I got to the border of Canada, the Canadians were like "yeah, come on in! No proooblem!" but coming back, whew, they read me the riot act. I didn't think they were going to let me back in the country!

You are not the only one who has had a hassle coming back from Canada sir...I too am a menber of that club..:D

I think im going to at least try and make it to the first two if not three legs of the trip. Its gonna be my first one. Some of my buddies wanna go and two of them have imports are they gonna get flamed out? What do you guys usually bring? Is the driving usually in the morning and then the venues in the afternoon and the party at night? Sorry for all the questions just want to see what its all about if you want/can tell your personal stories from last year what you did and such. And are there special hotels to stay at?

Gas is cheep as hell now(premium $2.09 in Georgia) and the tour starts in Madison, Wisconsin and the second day is in Racine, Wisconsin....your in Chitown .... you could do the first two days and get back home on less than a one tank of gas....:eyes:....you must really be broke.

Just FYI UD arena in Dayton, OH is not far from one of the really bad areas of Dayton. If you are staying at hotel I recommend going south about 10 miles and staying in the Miamisburg, OH area.

if you guys go , DO NOT DO BURNOUTS ON THE PREMISES DURING THE SHOW, YOUR CREDENTIALS WILL BE PULLED AND KICKED OUT. i have seen this done by other people on the tour and and at the car craft shows, just trying to help. just have fun watching the others get rolled for that

Haha! That happened to a buddie of mine a couple years ago, somewhere down south, don't remember exactly where but he took a local kid for a ride and did a couple of donuts in the parking lot. The show was over, but this guy on a golf cart came hauling ass over and asked for his credentials, and wanted him to scrape the sticker off the windshield. We told him we were not going to the show the next day and that we were going home, got in our cars and just left! Golf cart boy couldn't keep up! We went to the show the next day, and nothing was ever said. I think the show is just too big for them to remember every hooligan at the show! :D

There are bad people no matter what town you go through, can't give chicago a bad name based off of a few idiots.
I think it would be a loss for the tour if they don't stop through Chicago.

I'm glad they're not stopping in Chicago. The tour is geared towards smaller towns just like the route follows backroads and not highways. Plus, Chicago has too much traffic.

The tour was scheduled to stop at the GM Tech center, but for obvious reasons they changed the location. The Detroit area stop will now be at the Metro Beach Park.

Unfortunately my Dad and I are not going this year but we are hoping to have our car put back together for the stop in Detroit.
I also hope everyone goes out cruising on Woodward after the show in at metro park. Its a little ways away but if enough people come out it should be a blast.
