Default So i did the LT1 radiator swap.impressions

I saw people talking about it but not many seemed sure of how it would work or what had to be modified and what not to help keep temps down on a boosted car.I have a friend who sells auto parts so i got a nice deal on a 1996 LT1 radiator.its almost a 1.5" thick core. I left the plugs in the ports for the trans cooler and there is 1 opening about 3/4" on the lower driverside that has to be capped.Otherwise everything bolts right up and the entire swap took about an hour(i still have a/c).
Heres my impression:
The car gets up to running temperature faster, not sure if thats my imagination or because i live in FL and its 90* out with high humidity the car stays cooler longer even though i never put back on the extra puller fan i had installed in addition to the dual pushers. In stop and go traffic she never went above 195*.I pulled in a neighborhood and let her sit running, she went to about 204* but as soon as i started cruising she dropped to 186*.I still need to get the rest of the air out of the system so things will probably get only better.I believe after i get on it she stays cooler longer and cools down quicker also.altogether im happy with the swap, money well spent. If anyone decides to get 1 i can get you a good deal through my buddy.Heres a couple pics i took while it was sitting idling.

I bought a used LT-1 radiator. I believe it was out of a 95? It has a sensor right below the top hose inlet. The thing is held in place with a wire retainer and sealed with an O ring. It leaked a bit under a pressure test, so I just coated the O ring with RTV and everything has been fine. I actually notched my core support and seperated the AC condenser from the radiator far enough to get a 16 spal pusher in between.

the sensor you are talking about is the coolant level sensor .i guess it came on some lt1's and on 98-99 f-bodies.

Whats the deal with using LT1 radiators? Do they have a thicker core than ours?

Yes, they are about a half-inch or even more thicker I think. So thats great about the LT1 radiator fitting but what kind of difference did you see? How MUCH cooler does it run COMPARED to the LS1 radiator?

Do you mind sharing how much it costed you or pm'ing me the price. BTW thats a sweet investment, I've heard that they help out quite a bit for us folks who really need it.

i just swaped to the lt1 radiator but instead of epoxying the unused fittings shut, i got a friend to swap the ls1 end caps onto the lt1 core.

i got the lt1 rad for $50 from transamcreations.com give them a call and ask for the thicker lt1 radiator (93-96 had the largest)

with a m6 would it be possible to use an auto tranny radiator and run your power steering through that while just hard piping the stupid stock cooler in the upper radiator hose?

i had just over $100 into it for a brand new 1.the car seems to run cooler and thats even without the extra puller fan on there. And theres no reason to epoxy the trans cooler ports since no water goes through them the supplied cap works fine.

Damn a brand new one for 100 bucks is hella cool. I'd go for that for sure, money well spent bro!
