Default X pipes

What makes a good X pipe ?? and is an X pipe better for power, or an H pipe ? or indeed, none at all, and plain old single pipes from each bank ?

I made one for my own car, like so. I fully opened it up internally...Ive been using this for a couple of years now.

So is this typical of an X-pipe ? Bare in mind Ive only ever seen one X-pipe, and it wasnt like that.
A friend bought a DiFillipo exhaust for his Monaro ( GTO ) which was a TD 3" system with an X.
It used 2 90's similar to mine, except they were placed back to back, but not intruding into each other. And where they joined, there was an 1" hole in the back. So effectively, there was only a 1" link between the 2 pipes at the X-join.

Perhaps you could call that a balanced X design, but without the balance pipe.

Would less intrusion, and smoother flow down each single pipe be better for power ?

Would no X at all, and simple straight pipes be better for power ?

And then...what about noise ?

Or does it really not matter a damn ? talking 8-900rwhp+ here, dual 3" pipes. I now have a pair of 12" long Moroso Spiral Flows in the middle directly after the X, and a pair of Magnaflow mufflers at the rear.

Its still louder than I would like...but I guess it cant be helped.

you made that? nice. looks like the summit X i bought a while back. i vote X for sound bc i have had an X and an H and the H drones at 2K the X didn't (same set-up/mufflers) they both sound great at WOT. the part throttle is what im talking about.

Is an open X better, or an X where there is only a small link between the 2 ?

Mine drones around 60-70mph, which is one annoyance.

you know I have wondered the exact same thing.. X can be made in a few different ways and the amount they share can be different. I've never been able to find what the best X would be.
