I agree it's a great goal but it's not going to happen. The technology isn't there yet. And it would need to be there within a few years to make it happen by then. Time will tell.

they would have to get moving and quick. hypothetically, lets say somehow they get the tech in 2011 to make ALL models run without gas. it might take a while to re-fit these new fuel whatevers into a car. maybe they need a completely new model and that would take a while. itd be hard, i doubt it will happen, but technology is still growing, but id be on board even if it was $50,000 for one...........wish i could buy a Tesla roadster now

I wonder if they have arch reactors?

I doubt that will happen. Lots of OEMs have lofty goals that never materialize. Can they do it? Sure, but not by 2015, unless they intend to raise MSRPs sky high on all models. The days of an "affordable" Benz would be over.

In Europe you have Petrol and Diesel. Perhaps they meant to say they are getting off petrol and going to Diesel. I think that is what they meant...and that is awesome.

Publicity stunt, maybe?Agreed - ridiculous green-pandering. Here's the relevant statement from the article:
While it may well be that all Mercedes models in 2015 will be capable of running petroleum free, the reality is that many - if not most - will still be using fossil fuels much of the time. That may come in the form of coal for electricity, natural gas reformed into hydrogen, or petroleum fuels blended with biofuels.
Give me a break ...

Not sure I am all that impressed. Mercedes, like any auto maker looking to survive, should be looking at the wishes, demands, and buying trends of their customers & potential customers. If there is indeed a demand for "green" then they would be wise to go in that direction. If there is less concern for green and more for other factors, they would be quite stupid to focus on "green" and try to force their customers to pay the higher price for their blindness.

I fear too many corporations are pandering with their marketing saying they are going to do sooo many "green" things. They may find a bit of a shock when people don't want to pay the extra cost of their "green" offerings.

Some people will always want their V8s, V12s and even twin turbocharged V12s and if that person can no longer find that at Mercedes they'll go somewhere else.
These companies do need to add some more alternatives (within financial constraints of course) and some more fuel efficient vehicles to their line ups but totally abandoning the more power hungry/conventional gas motor type customers could do more damage than good to their bottom line.

They broke into Doc's garage and stole blueprints for the flux capacitors.

they can make their cars run on whatever the heck they want. If there aren't 10s of thousands of places to refuel them people won't buy them. I'm not going to buy a car and then have plan where I'm going to refuel during the trip. It'll be a big pain in the ass when you have to drive 30 minutes out of your way to get to a refueling station.
