Default Long tubes into stock exhaust on 02 TA and do you need extensions

Has anyone ever added long tubes and tied into the stock exhaust? How much do you lose doing this or gain with just the addition of the headers? I was thinking if cut at the right place you can tie into the factory setup fairly easy. Would an 02 car still need extensions for the 02's and where can you buy those?
Thinking about trying this with my setup since my goals are modest (low 12's) before hacking my exhaust off and running true duals or something that rattles, drones or is too loud.

i do see why you would do that, just spend that money on a offroad y pipe, i have long tubes, an offroad y pipe and stock catback and it is not that loud. the off road y pipe is ten times bigger then the stock y pipe, and it only like 150 bucks, smart money if you ask me. You will need 02 extensions lmp, and jegs have them, or you can also get some wire and make your own. hope that helps.

Well the headers I am going with will need custom mating to any Y I get and I don't know what one to even attempt matching it up to. I figure my friend and I can figure out what 90's or 45's we will need to cut off the factory ends and attach to the headers. Don't see anyone with it done like this so thought maybe I would give it a go and see (with dyno numbers). Then maybe sometime in the distant future going to a true dual when this exhaust is getting old. It's still in extremely nice shape with 30k miles on it and not seeing bad road conditions. Hate to just hack it off and don't have space to store it. I read some blurbs saying it isn't real restrictive.

Never mind! I just went and had a look and it is so pancaked down that we will never be able to attach a piece of round pipe to it unless we make our own Y. I may just do the dual setup instead.

So your Y pipe is like 25" in diameter? You must really have it high off the ground to get that size of a pipe under there.

I think the squeezed down pipe is deceiving. I have been looking on exhaust part sites and they sell oval tubing. 3" looks small so it is an optical thing.
