Did anyone else have to agree to pay MSRP on the advanced order for their GTO? I wasnt to happy to do it but they said that is how every advanced order is done by their Dealership.

Also, has anyone got any inside info on how much it will cost? I know alot of people are saying 33K but is that just talk? I was told Pontiac will release the price the first week in Sept.

I doubt any normal consumer will get the opportunity to purchase one under MSRP for the first year.

I have not heard any solid number's yet, the 33k is the only promising lead.

Well, your options are this.

1) order it at any local dealer you can find who wants $2,000+ down and then they'll tell you they aren't firm on the price but they do know they'll have to "mark it up to fair market value" as I was told by many here in Chicago.

Or

2) Order it with $500 down and pay MSRP.

Unfortunately unless you either are a family member of a Pontiac dealership owner, work for GM/Pontiac or work on your knees very well, you aren't gonna get it for anything less.

When these LS1 f-bodies came out in '98 they didn't sell for less than MSRP either. I had a reallllly tough time finding a 6-speed Formula with T-tops back then.

Same goes for any new model car that is in demand, expect to pay sticker or higher the first year. The price of pimping...

A local dealer here said that the MSRP was $35,900. I sure that's not "the gospel" but it could be including the "fair market value" adjustment.

Bad thing is I checked here so I could try and use my GM employee discount, NO GO. Of course they reserve the right to not place the vehicle into a fleet managers charge for sale as a GMO option. Bastards. That would save a lot of $$$$, a lot.

My old truck...2000 GMC Sportside, sticker MSRP 22,780....my price 17,652.32 Nice discount, then of course the rebates...

My friend ordered and got his NBM 1998 A4 hardtop z28 in january [1998] and he paid invoice + $100... That was in MA. I don't think there was much hype about switching from LT1 to LS1. Just my opinion.

I don't think it would be smart to pay MSRP for the GTO either.

I agree, it blows my mind to think that people not only pay MSRP but many are willing to pay the dealer mark-ups just to be one of the first to own a 'new model'. Hell, I couldn't live with myself if I had paid some of the sick mark-ups I saw on the new '03 Cobra when it first hit the lots around here. Now you can pick them up for way under sticker price, most SVT dealers have 2, 3, or more just sitting on the lots; and this is still the '03 model year!

Paying mark-ups is just plain crazy, all you're doing is making dealers rich for no reason.

I just don't get why it's so important to some to be the very first to own the car....

LOL, right. Right now dealers will be hoarding GTO's and making huge money on them for the "I need to have it before anyone else" people. Same thing happened to the ZO6/Cobra/STi/Evo.

Wait a few months and the prices will level off. They have on all the models I just mentioned. Here in MA you can get a STi at invoice.

My WS6 was marked up $4000! I got it for $850 under MSRP and I still feel like I got ripped off... I couldn't imigine paying OVER MSRP for anything. I'd rather wait a year and let them fix the bugs and get the second year model. I also wouldn't put a dime down until I test drove it (unless it was fully refundable).

Yea... this technically isnt the first year because they've built monaro's for a few years now and they've been exporting them to the saudi for a year now.

One dealer I visited wanted $5000 above MSRP, another "between $1000 & $2000" above MSRP to reserve one from their allocations.

At least they're building more (16,700) than the number of 2001 Camaro LS1's. BUT, people didn't buy the Z28's for many reasons (catalytic converter hump, cheap plastic interior, too low to ground for some, etc.); this car "fixes" those problems, so I expect demand to outstrip supply. Result = looks like MSRP (or more) for all of the 2004's.

At the same time, look at how many of us are content to wait for a 2005 model. Wouldn't surprise me if MSRP holds through the 2005 model also. Don't forget that the hood scoops on the 2005 will draw even more attention (buyers) and yet production will be approx the same!

I hate to break it to anyone paying anything above MSRP, but I have a silver 2004 GTO for $500 under MSRP. I know it's not much, but its better than MSRP. :)

If the sticker is going to be in the $30,000 and up neighborhood, I can think of many different cars I'd rather own for that money. Then I wouldn't see myself coming and going. Paying that hellacious premium for a car in that caliber just doesn't make any sense to me. GM still hasn't shown that they have it together in the engineering or quality department. They are behind many years in that aspect. They may have bent themselves over the barrel again on another platform. Then again, this is probably just the new car greed that sweeps in when you have a new design, like the Mazda Miata was when it was new. I'm keeping my hopes up though.

Why drive a 1/4 mile at a time? Certainly there are longer roads where you live. I plan to drive my GTO a lot. To gear it solely for 1/4 mile times at the expense of everyday driving dynamics is a mistake in my opinion. I only posted the times as a point of reference for sawedoff who has "many different cars he'd rather own for that money". Then again, you already knew that now didn't you Neo?

I agree with you on the drag racing thing. It's not anything I could really care about. I'd rather have a car that handles as good as it is excessively fast.That's why I like road racing, but there is nothing wrong with the sport of drag racing. I know in the past I've been arrogant about that, and it wasn't very polite to diss someone because of their preference. I am really tired of every car that comes out, even the Corvette, are muled on the drag strip. I just don't get it. I got to looking at the price, and it's really not that much, and it's comparable to what the market has available. I think it's better though because of the awesome LS1. I'm interested in the autocross edition.

you guys are kidding yourselves if you think this car in it's current guise is going to be a big hit. It may command msrp and dealer markup initially but you cannot compare it to the demand for the SSR, ZO6, or that new dodge sport truck (can't remember the name). The engine is great and there is no doubt it will perform but aesthetically it's nothing more than a cross between a honda accord and a gran prix. I'd buy a mustang first.

And of course you're exactly right! Thank god they only have to sell 16,700. Certainly no one out there wants an LS1 powered, IRS equipped coupe unless it looks like it just jumped out of the 70's. It's kind of like paying a $10,000 premium for a dressed up pick 'em up like a Denali. Now who in the hell would do that? Can you imagine?

What appeals to me about the GTO is that its a classy powerful car, has an engine I'm familiar with, driveline I'm familiar with, and is basically a hugely upgraded car for cruising. In a dream world I'd like the GTO to cruise to work with, and the Trans Am to drag with.
