Portable Air Conditioners

Portable Air Conditioners Being Florida and summer it is once again hot as all hell. I was thinking about buying a portable air conditioner for the garage to help cool things down while trying to finish building my car. Anyone have one of these? Any recommendations? Am I being a puss and should just continue to sweat my *** off?

At least you have a garage to work in, I don't even have a creeper.
Bright sunshiny driveway here. Unless its like today, don't exactly want to work in a thunderstorm. So you are being a puss. Maybe I am too, afraid of a little lightning and getting wet.

it'd be a smart thing. or just get a massive amount of shop fans. unless the garage is somewhat insulated...trying to cool down the garage will be like trying to light water on fire.
heat rash, heat stroke, sweating, smelling like *****, and getting jungle gooch are never fun. I do it everyday at work, Honda must not believe in fans or A/C or they are just too ******* cheap to provide anything for their employees.

it will be almost impossible to cool a garage down because of the door, etc. all you'll get is cool air if you stand right in front of it! I've got a big floor fan (Home Depot) and a smaller one throw the air around a little bit.

Portable A/C units are good but i think they are around $800.If you can get a 120v window unit in that would be cheaper & better.As for the garage door you should insulate it w/duct board that you can cut in sections and spray glue on.I do A/C for a living and you want too talk about hot try going in some of these attics in the summer were it is 120 plus w/ no breeze .

I am in the process of buying a air conditioner for the garage myself. I am going to remove the door to the side of the yard and block it up then put in a AC unit.
I am going to insulate the door as well.
I furure if we have a hurricane and loose energy, I can put a generator next to the garage and have some kind of relief.

Maybe Josh will chime into this one....he brought his portable GE A/C into the shop and it is THE SHIZZA MY NIZZA...he knows the specs better than I do...
Anyway, great investment. Makes working on cars a POC!!!

i got mine for $450 at brandsmart, it 12,000 BTU and it stands up on its own wheels, i just roll it around the shop to were i need it, if i aim it into a car's interior while im working inside i can literally turn it into a fridge. i dont know how i did it with out it.
look at it this way, its exactly like a stand up fan that blows ice cold air, but alot less air

See if one of those Equipment Rental places has one of these similar units to rent for a coupl'a days so you can test drive the idea.
Then find one that "fell off a truck"...

Dude, no offense, but just quit being a little girl and go to Lowe's and get a shop fan or two. It's Florida and you will sweat when working on your car, save the green for some go fast goodies. The last shop I worked at was like 110-120 in the booth and it wasn't heated, the black asphalt in the front was angled towards the building and it just got hotter than hell.

I too have an a/c'd garage. If you want it cool, you need a big *** a/c. I've got a 5 ton in my garage, and it keeps things cool enough. I'm an a/c contractor too. I refuse to sweat while working on the car. I'm such a puss, I put the car on the lift to check tire pressure. haha

My attic is already insulated above the garage and I plan on putting 2-3" thick foam board insulation in the garage door. I was looking at units like Josh is talking about 12k BTU and uses a dryer vent for the hot side. I have been working on this car for a couple years and have shed my share of sweat. Just with all the rain in the afternoon I can't open the door or everything will get wet and I have no windows or side doors in my garage. It's ~400ft2. I have a couple fans already, but blowing around hot air doesn't help much.
