Default too big a cam for stock heads?

so guys i have been researching the cam i have in my car as i was told by the shop i purchased it from that it would be good for a stock car and isnt a very big cam, well after finding out the info on my cam and reading up on the sticky about cams mine seems rather large. now correct me if i am wrong please but does this not seem like a decent sized cam? 263-276 .530 .540 LSA 113.

the car right now as it sits has a slp cai, asp UD pullies, a tune and a deleted muffler. (and of coarse all the supporting valve train components for the cam) i know i need long tubes believe me they are next on the list but they should be in within the next month seeing as my birthday is next month early.
i was also thinking that when i get the long tubes to get my intake and heads port matched by a local shop to see if my cam can really benefit from the extra breathing.

obviously im not an expert and am looking for some decent advice thanks!

ok well first off did you run that on stock heads ever? because that was my main question. second off did you run a stock converter at first, third why is my duration so high? i read that right off the cam card so im positive there was no error on my part but my duration @ .06 is 263-276 thats way higher than even the cc503.

That should have been at .006, try to find out what it is at .050 as that's what most go by.The duration numbers at .050 won't be quite as large, maybe more like something in the neighborhood of 230-240?

the heads are stock, with P&P.. but a have a friend that ran his with stock heads and it was almost the same as mine just smaller lift and duration, but on a 112LSA. and no converter i have an M6... but i think you would need to run at least a 2500 stall.. .unless you wanted to take it out of gear at the stop lights..as far as your duration.. im not sure why its so high. it must make power upstairs.. prolly like 4000 to 6800 maybe.. not sure

Like said that is at .006" not .050" like you traditionally see. I have seen the specs on that Speed Inc. Caddy cam you have but do not recall them exactly but I think its ~212 on the intake at .050" and ~224 on the exhaust at .050" making it a cam on the smaller side of the spectrum. But for the record your cam is fine for your setup no worries!

ok cool thanks stealth i was hoping you would chime in, and yes you are correct im stupid, those numbers are at .006" and at .050 is it 212 and 224. but per your thread it says that the cc503 is one of the biggest cams to run on stock heads and this cam isnt too much smaller is it? iirc the cc503 is .537 and .544 and mine is what .530 and .540, i always thought the lift numbers were what made a cam "big" but please correct me if im wrong.

The "too big for stock heads" crap is a bit silly, look at what the stock eliminator guys do. They use stock lift but .050 durations that actually approach these .006 numbers you posted, catch is rpms, they use aftermarket management and go well beyond what our pcm or a stock shortblock can handle.
For reliability sake you want to keep stock shortblocks down to say 6500 or less, meaning peak power 6200 or lower. That is what should limit cam selection. Yes guys go 230+ degrees intake on "stock shortblocks" but that is risky due to rpm, some make it work but rebuilding "stock shortblocks". Some of them just don't rev high enough to make it really work, in which case they would have been better off with smaller.

for .006" number that does not look like a big cam, though the .050 numbers would be nice. The 113lsa would make it a good emisions cam but otherwise is reason enough to skip it.

OK you posted the .050 numbers while I was typing. You are missunderstanding things, lift is not that big a deal, duration is because it impacts rpms needed.

I ran a zz4 cam for awhile which was 208/221 .474/.510 112 when I had cats on the car it was so mellow guys who knew it was there said it sounded stock. If you are prepared or flat out want a little bit of a noticable cam then you need to look at something with maybe a little more duration and depending on emissions testing maybe a tighter LSA.

ok cool that right there answers all my questions in whole now. thanks guys. funny how someone always is posting some stuff up right when youre typing too huh but thanks caprice. i just honestly thought at first that the guy on the phone had mis informed me about the size of the cam and what not.

but good to hear i was just reading thru another thread and noticed how similiar my cam is to the Crane 227 and other smaller cams with higher lift.
i really just need to get some long tubes on this baby and a decent stall converter.
