how is it an LS1 if it's a 97 Camaro? Does it have an engine swap?

Sounds like a blown head gasket. 97z28's came with Lt1's that year unless you did a Ls1 swap.

I didn't think it was an ls1 either but I wasn't sure since I'm not a chevy man so I took the owner's word for it but after talking to Stephen Sanders I found out this was not true.

If the thermostat was removed, it wasn't an LS1. It was an LT1, but hey - At least it's an F-body.

Are you able to determine whether or not the water pump circulating the coolant?

Is it actually boiling over, or is it just the gauge indicating high temp? With radiator cap off, engine running, can you see fluid moving through radiator?

Is this at highway speeds or low speed driving?

Is oil level correct?

Is there any smoke or odor from tailpipe? A blown Head gasket may show smoke/steam and a weird odor, almost sugarry smelling.

Is the return hose to the radiator collapsing, sometimes the spring inside the hose deteriorates, and the hose collapses, preventing water from returning to radiator.

Any recent work done?

If water pump is functioning, check for air blockage in front of radiator or between A/C condensor and radiator...

White smoke with an odor is usually a blown head gasket. Don't drive it. You could also be getting water in the oil, which would ruin the enfine. Have him pull the dipstick, and see if the oil on the stick is frothy, possible light brown in color. Also, if you CAREFULLY remove the radiator cap, you can sometimes smell exhaust fumes comeing from the radiator, sure sign of head gasket gone.

If fans shut down, and he droove it overheated, it could have warped a head.

I THINK fan relay blew caused car to over heat, now you have a blown head gasket. should make it home but not any farther. it happen to me one, same thing.

talked to them again and they said this car is still under warranty ( I don't know how it's a 97) and they are going to drive it if water is getting in oil or not. maybe will ruin engine and get another one under warranty. oh well it's not my car.

thanks guys for all the immediate help.
