Tools & Fabrication - Anyone needing a valve spring tool?
Larry
08-23-2003, 08:02 AM
I am offering an easy to use valve spring install/remove tool. The tool comes with an internal socket head stud for easy of wrenching and a grade 8 nut.
I currently have plenty of tools in stock. (02/02/05)
Unfortunately I have had to increase the shipping cost to $10 so that all tools will go out with tracking. This is resulatant in the number of guys reporting their tool lost in shippiing. Sorry for the additional cost! Total shipped is now $40.00.
Following are pics of the tool and with the tool installed on head.

Nice and simple setup, I like it! And, I also know how specific you are about the tools you use Larry, and how well they work. So, I think I'll need one :D
Gotta move this thread to the tools forum, but I'll leave a pointer in the internal forum.

I guess it's not obvious to me how it works. You just screw down that nut to compress the spring? Counldn't you end up breaking that stud?

The spring will compress long before the stud breaks or the threads fail. The threads and rocker bolt hold the spring load at max rpm and full lift. That's a lot more load than required to just compress the spring enough to get the keepers out.

I have a question. The stud screws down in the rocker arm bolt hole and bottoms out then the nut us applied to apply the pressure. Any concern with the stud doing damage to the head at the bottom of the bolt hole? Looks like a great tool! Thanks Larry!

John
I don't know how thick the head is beyond the hole but you don't have to torque the stud in but hand tight. I couldn't imagine torquing the stud so tight it breaks through the head. I did mine and no damage at all.
If you mean pulling the threads out when wrenching the nut then no to that too. The loads at max rpm full valve lift is greater than required to compress the sping just far enough to remove the keepers.

When you start cranking on the nut the stud will also tighten in the hole. I guess my question is will the stud stop trying to tighten itself when the bottom is reached or will it dig down as you tighten the nut down on it. Thanks.

I fabbed one of these up in the garage tonight, and tested it out on a motor sitting on the stand. I'll say this, if you'll ever change valve springs on an LS1, PICK ONE UP !!! Larry's price of $25 is more than worth it, trust me. I wish I had an inch/lb torque wrench to measure the torque needed, because when testing with my regular torque wrench I put it at the minimum 15lb/ft. and it never clicked. I used a regular rocker bolt on mine (can you say ghetto?) and that worked fine. Larry's setup is even better, with the stud.

Like Brian has said in the previous reply, it takes very little torque on the nut to turn it. A little lub on the bracket/nut/threads will make it turn even easier.
The stud will not "dig down as you tighten". At least it did not for me.

I have the one I used on my engine that I could send you. The stud is 1/4" shorter than the one I will be supplying with the new batch but it worked with my 26918 springs.

humanoid i have used one i made on the dual rev springs this last weekend 9/6. i had a broke spring and i used the tool and it worked fine. the difference in the one i made is that i used a longer metric bolt that i got from home depot instead of a stud. once you get in a groove it does not take long at all to change all the springs especialy with air tools.
Larry
09-12-2003, 08:43 AM
Using a bolt can be a dangerous situation. If you start applying load before you have enough thread engagement the threads could strip in the head. I haven't seen many bolts with enough threads to have enough thread to engage and then travel far enough to install the keepers. Particularly when installing a tall free length spring. Remember you are screwing into aluminum.
It will work with a longer bolt, I did it. I made one of these tools for my cam/spring swap and bought a bolt about 3 inches long, and also bought a nut/washer for it. You just turn the nut all the way to the top of the bolt head with the washer under the nut, then tighten the bolt in the rocker hole, and tighten the nut down to compress the spring. That way if you're worried about turning the bolt while you turn the nut, you can just use a ratchet/wrench to hold the bolt head while you turn the nut. It's a little more work, but I couldn't find any studs in the amount of time I had. Tool worked great, finished all 16 springs in about 4 1/2 hours. :D

I made one of these and used it on a full set of crane doubles. Works GREAT! Couldn't be any easier. I made my stud out of 8mm threaded rod (pretty soft stuff) and the stud made it through all 16 springs although I'll need to cut a new one for next time. Whatever Larry is supplying is probably much better.

The stud I'm supplying is strong and hard like an Allen bolt. It should last for many spring replacements as long as a touch of lubricant is used on the threads. The threads and nut mating surface on the tool should be lubricated. My stud also has a socket head so wrenching it into the head is a snap.
Glad the one you made worked out so well. Hopefully mine will work as well!
Thanks Tony. I think you will find it is a little better quality than the average can make in his garage.

Yeah that's fine if you didn't need it last week! ;) 20 seconds with the cutting torch, 30 seconds with the grinder, and a minute at the drill press....viola.... :chug:
What I can't figure is all these guys using tools where you have to maintain leverage on a ratchet while you fumble with the valve locks, etc.... you almost want to put them out of their misery! :D

This is well worth it for anyone looking at this.I made 2 a while ago.1 that fit 918's tight and 1 for duals.I use a 2 1/2 long bolt and have used it on many cars without any thread damage. They work excellent on single or dual springs. Now it takes me less than 1.5 hours to do springs.
Only other thing you should add to this kit is a hose that screws into the plug hole so you can pump the cylinder up.Now that would be a complete spring changing kit.
(I use a compression checker hose with the valve removed)

With the recent rash of broken bolts in the head I ask how strong the stud is. I've read few post about the rocker bolt breaking due to it side loading as it compress's the spring along with water pump bolts. How much strong/better is the provided stud. Thanks for the info Larry!

looks like a great tool.
I would use a bolt with a nut on it and hold the bolt with one wrent and turn the nut, this way you get all the threads in the hole and no concern about bottoming it out in the head
Larry
10-21-2003, 07:42 AM
The stud I supply has a very high tensil strength. It's an Allen bolt. They are very strong. As long a you run the stud down all the way into the head threads before attempting to remove the spring you won't have a problem.
Has anybody had a problem with the stud I supply? I have shipped out quite a few now and have not heard of any problems.

I have one and I've used it 2X. This thing is AWESOME for taking ANY spring off. Duals, singles, it doesn't matter. It was easier to put single springs back on vs. double, but I may not have had it perfectly aligned. It makes the back 4 cylinders on an F-body a breeze! Well worth $25. The only upgrade I would advise getting is a better nut. When using this tool to remove double springs, it seemed that the nut was a little soft so a trip to home depot solved the problem. Otherwise an awesome tool!

Thanks for bringing the nut problem to my attention. The nuts supplied were grade 5. I will supply grade 8 the next go around. Even with grade 8 the threads will need lubricant for longevity.

I've become a master with this tool. It will swap out any springs whether they are single or duals. With a stubby ratchet, this job can be done in a few hours. It is not impossible to lose a couple of valve locks in the process though. I did the swap on my 99 Z28 and lost 3. This was my first swap. I swapped them out again on my car and lost none. Then I did a swapp on a 00 WS6 and lost none. I guess it comes with practice. I used the TDC method everytime with hand tools.
One suggestion though. Shorten the legs of the tool so that when the spring is compressed, it is compressed more evenly instead of putting all of the pressure on the outside of the spring. Great idea Larry. Come up with some more genius LS1 tools.
Larry
11-25-2003, 01:56 PM
dragonZ28,
Glad you like the tool. I used a pencil magnet when I compressed the spring to help prevent losing the keepers.
I'll take a look into shorter legs. Really didn't notice any angular rotation of the retainer with my 918 springs. If it was there it was not a problem.
dragonZ28
11-25-2003, 02:20 PM
No problem Larry. I too used a magnet tool, and it helped out alot. The tool is great, but has the capability to be greater with shorter legs. This will relocate the tips of the legs around the center of the retainer more, and makes for even easier spring removal. If you have any more, shoot me a PM. I'm interested in purchasing one of my own. I used a friends and I want one.
A good trick to remeber with this tool is to slip the tip of the magnet down the retainer, and connect to the valve and pull it up while you compress the spring. It makes the TDC method work very quickly with little trouble. Plus it helps locate where the spring needs to be centered at for the valve to come through the retainer perfectly without rubbing the edge of hole in the retainer. I give you alot of credit. Very simple, but very effective.

Has anybody had the stud break yet? I know it was a problem with the autozone version of this tool, but it used a bolt rather than a stud. A stud might just totally eliminate the problem!
Is this question really that hard to answer?
Scalpel
01-16-2004, 10:52 PM
Mine has never broken the stud. Used 5 times now. Larry uses a very high tensile strength stud.
Larry
01-17-2004, 06:58 AM
If anyone breaks a stud I sure would like to know about it.
If you keep a small amount of lube on the threads you should be able to use it on many springs. Also lube the tool after use to prevent rusting.
I should have a good supply of tools in next week.

The information I have says the studs are made of allow steel and heat treated to RHNC 48-53. The alloy contains Chromium, nickel, molybedenum and vanadium of suffiecient quantity to assure that the specified strength properties are met after oil quenching and tempering. It will take a lot more pressure than the springs exert! The nut supplied is a grade 8 nut.
If you maintain lube while wrenching it should last for more spring changes than the average will ever perform. It will take a lot more pressure than the springs exert!
My previous reply has both my email and home addresses.

Larry, how do these work for reinstalling the springs? I can see them being usefull for compressing an already installed spring, but how would they work with putting on a new spring that isn't compressed yet? TIAIt removes and installed our valve springs. You do have to pressure up the cylinder or use the TDC method to keep the valve up to release and install the keepers.
