What stops it from exploding? The 2 fuel pump wires are positive/negative sitting inside gasoline?

Dont make fun of me, just curious =)

I wondered about this myself. My hypothesis is electricity takes the path of least resistance. Easier to go through a copper wire then across the liquid gasoline. Also, the wires are insulated not in the raw fuel. My path of least resistance was my answer to wires taht lose their seal somehow.

I understand what you are saying. But when using the butt connectors, there is bare wire that is exposed.

After installing my fuel pump, it just got me thinking =P

because liquid gasoline doesn't explode, its vapors do. Connect 2 wires with enough voltage to make a spark(12V probably isnt enough to do the job) in a cloud of gas vapor, and you'll have your explosion.

combustion occurs only in a specific air/fuel ratio range and gasoline is not a conductor of current.

If you are concerned about 2 wires....better not think about the big electric motor inside the fuel pump then

there has to be three things present for a vapor explosion or a fire 1.Fuel(obviously present in most gas tanks) 2. Air( in a specific amount between the upper and lower explosive limits of gasoline or AFR) 3. Ignition Source/Spark (the presence of a current through a wire does not mean a spark is present)

i always thought the motors were epoxied or some kind of resin filled to eleminate some sort of spark. i havent opened up an fbod tank but dont the leads go into the motor and make there first connection outside the tank?

seriously, 12V will cause a spark. ever arc'ed your battery? same thing happens with two wires with a 12V potential.

still a pretty interesting question.

i think 1redta hit the nail on the head, its the vapors that are flamable... and they actually have to be a certain mix of oxygen and fuel vapors, too much fuel and it wont ignite, and same with not enough.

So youre missing 2 parts with the wires IN the gas; 1. oxygen, 2. spark

Keep trying tho, you'll get it!

FYI gasoline is a flammable vapor. gas/ethanol/alcohol are flammable vapors and diesel/jp-8/kerosene are combustible liquids
