This is one of the most debated questions ever..if you do a search on it,it will give you insight....search "the merv"
personally i feel it gives a bit more MPH 1-3 from my own test.

I did it to my LT1, I thought it was a good mod, but I can't tell you if it made the car any faster.....it does clean up the engine bay. You will need a SS, WS6 or similar hood to make it work.

^^^^You don't need a different hood for it to work. But, there will be quite a bit of cutting and you have to lay the radiator back for it to work on the stock Z28 hood.

I don't have any personal experience with the swap, but looking at the design of each, I don't know how it couldn't help. There's a reason GM went with that design.

it helps because you are actually getting air from the front similar to the ram air design rather than to extract air from a fender well...

Maybe try to find a LT1 SS hood and use the SLP ram air.

You do if you want to use stock equipment like I did.

Somone posted info awhile on this and it made power

To me id do this over any cold air out there, and take out your fogs or rig it up like the LS1 guys do to duct more air into the lid.....

Search(Free ramair more) in the LS1 section

Somone also did like 4inch PVC intake that helped, the more air and the better air flow the better.

simply swapping to an SS hood will do nothing to help clearance this mod. The spot where you'll need more room is more toward the nose and the SS hood isn't any higher at that spot than the stock Z28 hood. The Ultra Z hood will work. Maybe certain cowl hoods. If your not up for a hood swap then you'll have to do some rearranging and probably some cutting of the radiator support. As stated above, do a search on "LS1 lid LT1" and you'll find a lot of talk on this one.

Unsure of any power differences but an LS1 lid would look alot nicer under the hood than your traditional CAI plus it would be different.

This will probably give you an idea of what you're up against.

Not a bad tech-aid, and its for a Camaro. I don't know if the Pontiacs are going to be the same or not. Lots of pictures, but it doesn't really have "step by step" instructions. Reguardless, it looks easy enough to figure out.

Do you think that set up is better than the Pontiac LT1 WS6 Factory ram air?. And would the LS1 free ram air mod, the one where you cut out the bottom of the airbox work on a WS6 LT1?

That's why it's attractive to me as well. I wonder if there are clearance issues with a Firebird. I read above that there may be with a Z28. Not sure how it all lines up with the Pontiac.

I got mine to work, had to cut very little out from under the Hood. You can tell I had to do a little work on that Cross Brace..
