Default My car Doesn't like the Serp. Belt....

Here is the story:
went out Sunday night, to hang out with some friends.
Another Z28 wanted to race, just for fun
First two runs I won no problem...
Third run he got the jump and stayed ahead by a car doing about 110. Thats when i noticed that my car had no more GO. I slowed down to take the next exit when I looked down and my temp. gauge was in the red and the steering was hard.
Turns out the car didn't like the belt around 110mph. left it back on the road.
Found the belt put it back on drove it home (Belt had a big cut going down the center of it) It is now replaced.
Here is the question...
Should I be worried?
Can it be something else that caused this problem?
Or does it happen sometimes?
The car has never done this before and I have gone faster than 120mph before with no problems.
Thanks for any help...

well at 120 your car is under a pretty serious load and the belt might have a tendency to start walking off on you. It could have been an old belt or maybe your tensioner is just not performing. How was the condition of the old belt?

The belt was about 2 yrs old, but only with less then 10,000 mls on it.
It looked in good condition.
I have replaced the Tensioner about 30K mls ago.
It has never done this before, while driven above 120..
