Default smell coolant & low coolant light ON

what can it be?

I smell coolant, no a/c or heat on.

I also have my low coolant light come on after several minutes of driving.

I've checked the radiator twice and it's been fine (full to the top), I've filled the reservoir cover, just to be sure it's not that. Same level.

Also, my temp gauge never passes 215-ish.

I've touched the passenger floor and it feels a little damp, but it doesn't smell like coolant, just a bit dirty water. Maybe it's just from the heat created on the underside of the car. I haven't touched behind the dash over the hump though..

any input?

EDIT: Now that it's winter, I'm using the heater. I park my car outside. Well, when I wake up in the morning the inside of the windshield has ice. I think I know what this means, but let's see you experienced people tell me. Oh and every once in awhile that I've recently checked, I have had to add some coolant.

Its your heater core. Needs to be changed. A search on this site should provide detailed instructions or visit shobox's web site.

it doesn't feel overly wet. Also I touch the carpet and smell my fingers and it does not smell sweet, just like dirty carpet.

Invest in a pressure tester. And find the leak or take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

WOW another smart answer to someones post

remove the kick panel on the drivers side to see if you see steam, could be the heater core.

let the car cool down completely maybe even overnight then take the radiator cap off and crank the car and leave it running until the engine warms up to operating temp. if the water in the radiator is bubbling (sometimes it will also smell like exhaust coming out) it is a blown head gasket.

this is the only thing I think it could be besides the heater core.

Check your hose under the coolant fill tank they like to leak and show no signs of it
