Default Any non-header cars with cams???

I would like to put a cam in my car, but would rather not use headers. I would be getting tunning though. Are any of you guys installing cams without headers.Which cams are you using, and what kind of power are you getting?

I would personally run some headers, you can always run catted ypipe with a mellow catback if you are concerned about noise. Running stock manifolds will hinder your performance. If you are concerned about smog, most places wont even notice--so long as you are running cats. Hell the place I took my car too passed the EGR and AIR visual without either system on the car, and it passed all other visuals even with the FLPs in place.

Hope that helped, if not consider it a TTT

I installed my cam with stock manifolds and saw little increase till the headers. Then the cam WOKE up. They do make split duration cams that cam work with the stock manifolds. But you will be limited on how big you can go.

But if you just have to have stock manifolds, go with a cam with a huge exhaust duration. It will help out a lot.

Due to a the QTP backorder BS I was forced to run my F1 cam on stock manifolds for a month or two. The car was a complete dog - headers will really wake things up. Personally, I think the money spent on cam and tuning is a waste without headers (even if you don't go with longtubes go with midlengths like MAC)

Only because of budget constraints right now and I got a Hotcam kit for 200 dollars. I can't wait to get headers, my problem is I have QTP/Kooks taste on a pacesetter budget

Back in March 2000 I was the first one I know of to do a hotcam install. couldn't afford headers though, the car made 330 RWHP and 340 TQ.

Wasn't bad, except that the car went one friggin tenth faster at the track than before, gained 4 mph, but only one tenth e.t.

I put longtubes the next spring, car gained 4 more tenths an 1 mph..made an unreal diff.

I would def recommend headers, dont' bother with a cam, even a small one like the hotcam or soemthign without some kind of header..just my experience.

Yah, the cams don't seem to work nearly as well without the headers to go with them. A buddy tried it, but never was very successful at the track until he finally got rid of him manifolds.

Just my opinion. but my cam made a bigger difference than the headers did. I ran cam only for a year or so. Gives you alot more up top, and the headers give you alot more down low. If I could only do one of the two mods, I would pick the cam for sure, especially on a 2000 and up car.

I've done this several times.

1) B1 cam with stock manifolds/stock cats - 342rwhp
2) 218/224 cam with small heads, stock manifolds, stock cats - 363rwhp
3) 227/224 cam with GTP heads, stock manifolds, stock cats, stock mufflers - 393rwhp

So, with a cam and stock manifolds I'd guess 330-350rwhp, depending on cam size. With heads and cam but stock manifolds, anywhere up to 400rwhp is possible, and the car will sound totally stock. Its actually really cool

Then I would love to find out why I am so low.

I was in the same boat back in 00'. My 99 had 4.10's, HPP3, Borla, shifter, lid, filter, torq bushing. I ran 12.80-12.90's @ 110. With the hotcam I ran a best of 12.54 @112.4 at one track and 12.62 @ 114.2 at another. That was with stock y pipe, manifolds, Goodyear Gsc's, stock suspension. Not to mention how much more fun it was with that lope.

Even with just a cam, you will have more power than before plus a much wider rpm range. I have the TR224/114 with manifolds and it drives like a totally different car. No dyno or track results, but the exhaust sound is much more race sounding, and it peaks at 6600 rpm instead of 5400 with the stock cam. I'm planning on getting QTP headers at some point, though.
