Default Carrier shim selection

2000 TA, Torsen with 3.42s. I just replaced the axle and carrier bearings. Problem is the factory shims are way too tight. I actually broke one shim trying to tap it in. My initial thought was to mic the factory shim and go a little smaller depending on what size shims are available. Also considered the adjustable shims from reider racing.

Anyway, what's the proper way to select the correct thickness shim, and will this affect the contact pattern on the gears requiring adjustment?

Additional info.. just miced the shims and they're .237. With the passenger shim in place the gap on the driver side measured at .147, although I think it's a bit larger than that.

if only changind bearing you should replace the same shims which ypu remover , should be no reason to change , if you change it will change pattern , only reason for same shim not fit would be if you did not complete seat the bearing( may be trash or nick to stop bearing from seating)
