Default "low boost":problems UPDATE

I have my 17psi spring in there and am only seeing 12psi.I had a crappy boost controller on there on my old setup and now I have no boost controller.Ive been reading that I need to have the bottom port on the WG vac referenced. Can I reference from any vac source?

Yes....pull a vacuum source from the intake side to the bottom port. Also the bottom port opens the gate...top port holds it shut.

Tial reccomends not to use a vac source to the wastegate...just boost only, which means it would have to be before the throttle body. At the same time I have used the intake so the car makes more boost, without any problems.

Bottom port is for a reference, top port is for adding pressure to keep the gate closed, as stated before.

Per Tial's suggestion on their website (as posted above), I have my bottom port on the WG running to the compressor outlet fitting on the turbo housing. The top port on the WG is vented to atmosphere. Seems to be working fine so far with the .5 bar spring for now and no controller.

How much boost are you seeing with the TiAL .5 bar spring?

Not sure yet, still breakin the motor in and savin the cash for the tune. Should have it tuned by the middle of next month and I'll let you know. A little over half throttle it flashed up to 7-8psi on the gauge by accident the other day when I was playin around with it. Hopefully it won't creep much over 8psi...for my trannys sake!

I would think any spot on the charge pipe before it enters your intercooler would be optimum, but it may not matter, probably anywhere before the TB would work. Maybe drill a hole and get a small fitting installed/sealed on the charge pipe and run a 3/8" or so fuel type hose to the WG so it sees actual boost before the TB blade/intake.

its a turbosmart 38mm
I know because we took it off and put a plate over it and the boost didnt change

so would that mean the leak is somewhere between the heads and the turbo?

if you pulled the WG off completely and ran a block off plate and it still made the same boost it could be the turbo, or a huge leak. I'd do a boost leak test first, that would tell you a lot. also check the turbine & comp wheel for any damage.

you could try pulling the boost reference on the WG and S L O W L Y rolling into the throttle to see if it builds boost.

I found a small crack on the hot parts where a brace is welded that bolts to the block for support. It wasnt super open but is probably half inch long and could feel a steady stream of exhaust coming out at idle.
I put some high temp stuff on it for holes and cracks in exhaust.I dont know if its big enough to hurt that bad its drying now so Ill try it tomarrow..

is there not enough room to try and weld it shut.... I would recommend that over "some high temp stuff." If it is just silicone then I do not think that it will hold anyways.... What are you using to cover it with?
