Is it really necessary to tune my car for only 5psi of boost for a rear mount turbo? I dont plan on running anymore than 5psi period unless I get a tune. I will have a wideband, fuel pressure and boost gauge.

I just have a hard time spening $800 to tune a car for 5psi.

What do you guys think?

I think that an $800 tune will be a lot less than a $3000 shortblock!

Get the car tuned. The stock tune will run too lean and be unsafe, even at 5PSI. The wideband will verify the stock tune in insuffiecient right before something blows apart otherwise

No, and sending it out would be better then nothing. We do mail order tunes here and can get it close, but we will still error to the safe side meaning a little less then optimal on hp. You should be able to get a good custom tune done for less then 8 bills.

Don't even try to get into boost without a tune man. Adding boost alone is going to do nothing but lean it out and cause engine damage. You have to add extra fuel to go with the added air.

No offence to Hellbents10 but I wouldn't trust a mail order tune for anything other than driving the car to the dyno shop. The mail order tune I got for my car was so lean it would just start poping and crackling when I got over 1/2 throttle.

On a really mild setup like this its not to hard to hit through the mail, just error on the safe side. On a setup like yours though it should only be used to get some where to have it checked and done in person though. So i can see where you are coming from on that comment.

I have Magnuson cars come here all the time with canned tunes and they are nice and safe all though much more power can be had after the tune is dialed in.

i agree. I got a mail order to drive my car to dyno, and kept the boost @ 3 psi. The car was like 10 to 1 afr so it was super rich, but got the car there.

Now i paid for a mail order, and a dyno tune for the maf. Next yr will probably be a sd tune and be more money. There all worth it.

Well hmmmm.....I called around today and was quoted $450-$650 depeding the difficulty to tune it. I will probably pay that much. I just wasnt sure if the factory pcm and tune was capalble of pulling enough timing and upping the fuel enough to compensate for the extra 5psi.

You don't need a tune to drive to get a FI car tuned unless you change the injectors. Just stay out of boost and you will not hurt anything.

That is correct. Let me flesh it out a bit more. First, stay out of boost. You will be flowing far more air than your tune is good for. If you stay out of boost, you are basically where you started, naturally aspirated.
Second, most change out the injectors to take advantage of the extra air. But you must change the settings in the PCM immediately, so you can't change them out at home and drive it to the tuner.

AFA the tune itself, 800 is far too much. 450 is much more reasonable, 600 is on the fringe.
AFA a mail order tune, that is what I started with. It got me in the ballpark. But I immediately started fine-tuning it. Each car is an individual, and no tune will work in all cars. That is why taking it to the tuner will yield optimal results. If you do that, make sure that he tunes it both on the dyno and on the street. The tune should make optimal power, to be sure. But it must also be driveable.
