1998-2002 Trans Am WS6
I'm looking at getting a 1998-2002 Trans Am WS6, and the automatic transmission that comes these is it the 4L60E? I was wondering what gears ratios come with these cars, 3.73 or 4.10? Do these transmission handle mods, I come from modding Silverado SS and V-Max truck and I know those transmission won't handle a lot of power so I assume it is the same for the Trans AM? Do they come with torque management? I have always wanted a Trans Am WS6, but I ended up with a truck but I have some money for another car and I am looking at Trans AM. Do they come with G80?

yeah its the 4L60E, i'm pretty sure the WS6 versions came with a 3.23 ratio, the 4L60E is pretty weak, they'll handle light mods, but anything major you'll probably need to upgrade.

The rear ends are weaker than the transmission most of the time. Do you particularly just want an auto? The 6spds are a lot more fun to drive (I have both), especially if your doing performance mods. Also the 6spds (with the exception of the stock clutch in older cars) seem to be able to take more abuse than the autos as well.

the stock 4L60E in my car survived maybe 20 passes after the 402 went in, it started slipping during almost every WOT run,and that was on street tires with no traction. bottom line is its weak, if you get serious mods on an A4 TA you'll need to upgrade that transmission. and yes you can tune the car with EFI Live

I'm down to fix the transmission so it will handle power it makes with the mods I'm probably going to install, I can't have a stock car or truck all the car I have owned I always mod them. Do these car require pumping 91 octane or can u run them on 87 octane? I wouldn't mind a manual, I had an 83 Z28 with the 5 speed manual but the area where I live there is a lot of traffic, I live in L.A so that would require a lot of shifting and downshifting. I would rather have an automatic for now. If I remove Torque Management would the transmission handle that?

Cool, thanks for the information. So TM is only on newer GM cars & trucks. It is good that gas prices are going down. I'm used to pumping 91 octane on my Silverado V-Max, well tomorrow I'm going to start looking for some Trans Am WS6. Thanks for the information.

If you want a steeper gear and are planning on mods, I'd skip this wimpy 7.5" rear and go to either a 12-bolt (8.5") or 9" axle. Lots of options there.
