Default Custom Intakes??

With all this talk about heads stalling with a LS1/6 intake manifold, how come more people don't go with a custom intake? I'm sure they wouldn't help at all on a stock car, but could a larger H/C set-up bennifit from a custom intake like the RGR from LS1 speed? I see most are tuned for large displacement or high RPM motors, but has someone made one for more streetable applications? Reason I ask is because I've had my eye on the RGR from LS1 speed for my H/C set-up.

Think it is more

1) the fact that not that many people knew the Airflow was being stalled,

2) dont want/have spend the $$$$ for a sheetmetal intake

3) for the $$$$ you get your last 10hp, but dayum thats an expensive addition.

On the up side, you do get that last little bit of hp, and a more custom one of a kinder. I dont think the sheetmetal intakes are really anything to keep the heds from stalling but could be.

I'm more worried about losing the low end of the spectrum with a shorter runner. Like you said, it can be expensive, but if your looking for the extra edge..... Not to mention you get larger fuel rails. That might make you feel a little better. Only other thing to do is wait for the LSx intake.

Change rails to the Nasty rails or Speed Inc, and port the LS6 a little. Theres a few sponsors that port, or have ported the LS6 intake.

Do you know which ones? Is it just port matching?

If a person had the extra $$ to spend on a custom intake, would it be worth it on a H/C car? Would driveability suffer?

I read something awhile ago in a magazine that SAM (School of Automotive Machinists) spent a rediculous amount of time and money on thermosetting putty and custom port work and couldn't improve upon the LS6 intake at all !!....all they managed to do was ruin a perfectly good intake and LOWER the flow numbers

and remember....those guys REALLY know what they are doing when it comes to airflow and port work

Beast 96Z, look at the thread about Futrals intake and others using the search feature. Looking at graphs, unless your spinning stratos rpm's then may be no need for it as this is where most the after market intakes pick TOPEND only. You will also notice the wavy lines thru the curve, compared to an LS6, turbulence, as well in some areas under the curve there is a loss of power, however significant it is its a loss. Those intakes are made for TOPEND so they have to sacrifice somewhere. Also, I would hold off on any decision til the FAST LSX comes out. There seems to be a little controversy on the gains being over the LS1 or 6, and exactly how much, but its design definatley allows it to be ported...who knows maybe they will give one to SAM and we can get a skinny on it!

The FMS intake looks like it will be very cool. It also looks like it might hit the market before the LSx. Guess I'll wait and see what happens before I drop $1800 on a guess.
