Default 12 bolt or 8.8

If i was to get a new rearend then would you recommend getting a 12 bolt or 8.8? I have heard the 9 inch rearends are so leaky its not funny, the 12 bolt is strong but heavy, and the 8.8 is lighter and just as strong as the 12 bolt. I guess I'm just trying to get some reassurance. Thanks in advance!

I'm interested also. There's been tons of threads on the 8.8, but I've only heard of two people running them. Would you run into a problem using stock axel tubes? What if you wanted 33 splines?

u don't need 33 spline unless u are going to be running 700+hp. like it's been said many times before stock 8.8 with stock 28 splines have ran 9's. I do not know why there haven't been more people talking about the 8.8 since I know there are more than just 2 people on this board running the hybrid. I really do not know what u are asking for so please be a lil more spacific.

I've had pretty good results from my strange 12 bolts, but did replace the axle seals recently due to leaks.

Stock axles can break on a H&C car; make sure the 8.8s are bigger than stock.

the axles used in the 8.8 are bigger, 31 spline. I picked one of them up.....heavy *****. They are moser too. My (ex)gf ran into it and it fell to the concrete floor. The axle was fine, concrete was chipped pretty good. The 8.8 is only about 25lbs heavier than stock 10 bolt. strength will be the same on 8.8 vs 12 bolt with the same internals. ur not going to need anything more than a 31 spline unless u are puttin out ALOT of hp.

I have one word for you that makes me pause a LOT before ordering one of these 8.8's.

WARRANTY

Z:

I deleted your post. It was antognistic and include swearing. As I read the warranty comment it is directed to any aftermarket rear, which is a good factor to consider.

I would like to clarify exactly what I meant by saying "warranty"

As far as I know, Strange and Moser both offer warranties. Does the guy that makes the 8.8's offer one?
It seems to me that you know this guy and are friends with him. Thats great for you and you believe in him. I dont know him from Adam and since this is the internet, we all know that what somebody posts on a bulletin board or chatroom or email may not always be truthful.

I think his approach is sound and he'll sell quite a few.

BUT, if he believes in these modified 8.8's, then he needs to offer a written warranty of some kind like Strange or Moser.(we are talking about spending close to 2k of our hard earned cash here!!)

That alone is worth a few hundred bucks to me.

Z. I didnt post this to get your blood pressure up, but I think it is something to consider for anyone looking to upgrade from the 10 bolt.

Sorry about that. as u know it's easy to take words wrong on the net.

Yes he does offer a warranty, very good one I might add. I had trouble with my rear end (yes the 8.8 he built) in the very begining. since I lived in Ks and he lives in Tx he built me another BRAND NEW rear end and swaped them out, no cost to me. He even paid for gas for me to come down (I went down there and back in one day). It turned out it was the pinion bearing. Him and his friend studied it and could not figure out if it was my falt, his or the company who made the bearing. So that says alot right there. He didn't know who's falt it was, built me a new one, gave me money for gas, put it in and still doesn't know who's falt it is. nuff said . pretty good for a guy who builds the rear ends on order, not like moser who has them laying around.

Might wanna edit that post before it gets locked, I dont think he is a sponser, but anyways, Im considering getting the 8.8 from him, but i Look at the prices he has, and I see that the 12bolt is only about 300bucks more.....so I dunno either, maybe when more people start getting the 8.8

Prices used to be cheap, with the options I want the rear would cost 2,300.00 and the strange 12 bolt would be around 2,400.00

Why did the prices jump so high, I remember they were less than 2,000.00
