The "other" other 10-bolt?

The "other" other 10-bolt? Back when, there were two 10-bolts -
the Chevy, and the BOP (Buick/Olds/
Pontiac).
If I recall correctly, the BOP was a
non-C-clip design. It also stood up
behind the 455s pretty reliably. The
BOP 455s weren't usually high revvers but
made some monster torque, >500 lb-ft
on some of 'em.
Never see anyone rigging these for the
early or late F-bodies the same way
they do the 12-bolts, but I think they
are similarly stout (Chevy 12 vs BOP 10).
Maybe it's the lack of cores?
Just wondering why the 8.5" rears aren't
used more. I guess maybe if you're gonna
spend, people only want the ultimate?

Re: The the 8.5 inch 10 bolt would hold up just fine behind 95% of the F-bodies out there. the big strokers (422-427-452) might break one here or there, but they would probalby stand up to that pretty well also.
your everyday heads and cam cars putting down under 450 ft lbs whoudl be no match for a 8.5 assuming its set up right and there are not any bad parts in it.
why arent they used more? because its a serious pain in the buttocks to have one set up for the newer f-bods, and most compaines would probalby rather stick to one rear end (within the confines of GM, obviously some also make the Ford 9 and Dana) rather than have to tool up to make a 12 bolt, which will be more for the hard core sector of the market, and the 8.5 which would be more for the masses. If they did both rears the cost of both would problaby go up fairly considerably. especialy when you think about the fact that at least one company (moser) casts F body specific housings with the torque arm boss. I assume they chose to go with the 12 bolt simply because it will be adequate for the hard core guys, and the everyday car can also use them with little disadvantage, where the 10 bolt would have breakage problems behind a few of the more intense cars.

Re: The Pisses me off that GM stuck the 8.5" 10 bolt in the ZR2 S10, but not in our cars. I've even heard from some on the S10 forums that newer stick 2wd trucks now even get them. I'd like to see a stock 4.3L break a 7.5" axle LOL. I'm suprised at how much beefier an 8.5" axle really is.

Re: The in regards to the 8.5 strenght, a buddy of mine with a full body 72 camaro with a 434 small block and 300 shot with the 8.5 in it, and has pulled the wheels many of times doin down the 1/4. so ya, it will last, just wish i could find a car that has susp. setup like ours, and get a 8.5 for it. maybe the 83-92 camaros had one???

Re: The sure does.. shouldnt be that tough to fabricate one. GM even sells the weld up brackets for repair shops, and even over the counter.

I've heard of this being fabbed for under $1k. Sounds like a great idea to me... I'll be looking into it next time I break my 10 bolt. Probably next week... lol.
