Default Will an LS1 and t56 fit into an (old) 2002 bmw?

The older dudes know exactly what car I am talking about I bet! :-)

Not a 2002 year model, but the old 2 door 60's-70's 2002 bmw.

The engine bay looks small, but I like these cars...if the ls1 won't fit what would you suggest? Would an SR20det fit?

I have scoured the net, but no one is doing any talking about doing anything but a m3 motor swap or s14 or some other expensive bmw stuff...if the bmw inline 6 will fit, i bet at least the sr20 will fit...

Just dreaming up a fun project, and don't want to pull the trigger on buying this 2002 I like unless the LS will fit!

I'm sure it'll fit... I've seen v8s in datsun 510s. It only takes a tape measure and a 2002 to figure it out I'd like to see this swap!

I would say that its a very tight squeeze. I've seen a few E30 LS1 swaps and they barely fit. Lots of pounding to get a T56 into the tunnel and headers are very very close to the steering shaft. I may be easier with the 2002, since it has a steering box, not rack and pinion. But you won't know until you try.

I thought it would be a really tight fit as well due to seeing how crammed an ls was in the e30's....hmm...maybe i'll hold off until someone else gives it a try!

I once put a Vega engine and trans into a 1600, Why you ask, could not aford to rebuild the 1600, but had a few Vega engine left over from a few V8 vega swaps.. So, cutting tools and a welder came out.. LOL... wasn't the fast or quickest, but it go me and the gang around and to school.

If I remember, the Front cross memeber will most likely need to be cut and welded or some mod on a oil pan. But there was a lot of room so.. good chance it will work.

And it will be heavier, slower and more expensive to do anything too. Spend the time on the LSX if you are serious and you will not regret it.

The LSX is physically a better fit for almost every car, the 2jz is really long, really expensive, and you need a standalone to go fast with it. LS1 is SUCH a better motor for a swap. Also, you should just get the 2002... why are you afraid of banging out the firewall or doing some fab work? How else are you supposed to learn.

i think you could get it to fit,it may not be easy but im sure i would fit,and would be the better choice of all...whatever you do,dont do a sr20 i really hate those motors and think its a waste..you would be a lot better going with the 2jz single turbo over that junk sr motor...but ls1 would be the best and coolest!!!!

love the 2002's, lsx in that or an e30 is my dream car, or a datsun 240z...that would be an easier fit

I had an 79 grey market M6. The bigest weaknes with older bmw's besides the rust is the rear independent suspension. They are weak and offer no adjustability. They also had a hard time keeping the tires flat on the ground. The camber/caster would change wildly under acceleration or braking.

The M6 did not come out until 1983.

if the car has rust, and they allmost all do, run away if it's into the unibody.
you don't want to overpower a car that isn't solid under you.
