Default How annoying is a spool on the street?

I have been thinking about replacing my open carrier in my 67 camaro with a spool. I know that with a spool it will make it difficult to turn without hearing chirping from the tires. Other than the tire noise, is there anything else that is annoying about the spool?

Parallel parking is a hassle and sharp u turns are out of the question. You will notice tire scrub when turning at intersections, but all in all it isn't bad with a spool. My driving is mostly rural and I hardly ever notice I have a spool when I'm driving a car with one. Bob

Spool is no problem. I have a spool in mine and it's really no big deal. I also had a Detroit locker at one time and I can tell you it was dangerous with a 6 speed in rainy weather. Just a for what its worth, a spool is much more driver friendly vs a locker.

Thanks for the replies. My 67 is only an occasional toy for fun so u-turns, parallel parking, and rain are rare instances!

When you turn corners your inside tire is always going to chirp. If you have to drive in rainy conditions be careful. Other than that there is usually no problems.

if you run soft compound tires (i.e. drag-radial, ET Street, slicks) the tires will not make any noise or chirps when turning. a standard hard compound street tire will make noise, though. parking lot maneuvers, backing out of your driveway onto the street... things like that will be where you feel the spool. other than that... for the cost and the strength factor they really aren't bad at all.

I love mine, I dont think its annoying at all. In fact I find the parking lots to be very amusing when others are around.....

Thanks for all the replies. I agree, for the price of the spool it will be worth it my in 67. I will look into getting a softer compound tire for rear.

I don't mind my spool at all. The only time I notice it is if it's real cold outside or if it's wet.

Spools work great although I just removed mine and went back to an Eaton center section. Think of a spool as both wheels are always driving forward so even in turns the rear tires will always point you straight. It feels like a push all the time. They work great for drag racing but Dukes of Hazard powerslides out of turns won't happen.

And spools in wet weather are suicidal
