Default Project cheap and go fast?

It in the planning stages, but i'm thinking about buying an s10 4wd or 2wd and making a play toy, i want it to be reliable. Hoping to make close to 400horse/torque. My first goal is to get a motor, as i'm understanding 5.3 are the same block as the 6.0 just smaller bore, but they still make good power.
Just wondering would it be cheaper for me to switch it to carb then stay EFI if i get one i'd be hoping for 50k or less miles. By the time i was all said and done how much would you think it would come up to.

The 5.3 is a affordable alternative, It all depends how complete you buy your engine..... If the unit comes with a harness, pcm and all the injection components it's going to cost in the same ballpark as converting to a carb...
