View Full Version : Got the 9... wasn't easy but got it....

Went to Infineon yesterday in Sonoma CA to test the car a bit more prior to Pinks.... We made a nitrous pass a few weeks earlier but spun the tires bad so we bolted up DA shocks out back in an attempt to get her to hook....

The results last night were mixed. For a few hours 9's avoided us barely.... Made a first footbrake pass after a admittedly weak burnout and for some reason the car KILLED the MT radials off the line.. My tuner wanted to pull some timing retard and feed it back in over 3 seconds so we did that in between runs...

Went to the lanes again, did a good burnout this time, got on the t-brake and floored it and 2 step limited it to 4K. Let off the button and she DEAD HOOKED and headed for the moon!!!!! Got it to where the bumper narrowly missed the ground and accidentally shifted from first to 3rd cause of the shock of seeing nothing but sky.... Spent the whole rest of the run in 3rd gear.... timeslip read 1.40 60' on the back tires, and 10.07@139.... damnit..... if I had only used 2nd gear....

Third run spun the tires hard again out the hole 1.70 60'.... 10.19@139 nothing great to report...

4th and final run, swapped to a new fresh bottle, 900 psi of bottle pressure. Got on the brake and she launched and got STRAIGHT busy... blew thru the traps and knew it was a good run....

1.47 60' time and a 9.79@139.8mph.... thank god.... I'll have some videos up soon and i'll also shoot a pic of the timeslip. I also won a 12 pack of beer for being the fastest 4th gen at the track that night.... Car is a 383 LT1, single plane conversion, AFR 227's, solid roller cam, 1/2 filled block, FAST XFI, rear mount dist, crank trigger, accufab TB... TH400, 9" rearend car.....

Sounds awsome man! cant wait to see vid :D

here's the video...... couldn't upload it as an .avi for some reason.. shortened it and converted it.....

09-01-2008, 02:47 AM
damn when you get that car to hook you will be deep in the 9's with that mph. good run .

09-01-2008, 04:09 PM
that track is downhill wish there was one around here

09-01-2008, 06:19 PM
hahahah. the track is not downhill the shutdown area is uphill giving the impression that the track is downhill....

It's Infineon in Sonoma and it's one of the best tracks in the country.... Top Fuel and FC run there..... absolutely sick track..... I always run my best times there...

Congrats man, it's come a long way.

The problems you're having is exactly why I haven't gone back to the radial to be honest. I had on and off results last year n/a running them, I'd love to slap a set on but I already know what I will have waiting for me when I get to the track.... inconsistant and unpredictable traction issues.

I really respect the guys that can make run after run at different tracks on different days with them and have consistant results, I had a hard time getting the car consistantly do the same thing at the same track on the same day.

IMO, for what it's worth I wouldn't run a radial unless you have to for the class you want to race. If you don't have to run them, don't. You'll enjoy racing alot more with a regular slick on the car, I certainly have.

ask and you shall recieve...

I defintely hear you JL..... We couldn't get consistent results out of them at all... I have more respect now than ever about guys who hook on them all the time. I don't know how they do it....

but more often than not the ones running sick times with them are mostly turbo cars and they hit the tires way different than big nitrous cars..... how many world record holder radial cars are nitrous cars??? Uhhh none.... that i know of.....

My W's come today. and pinks starts friday but we're towing to the track tommorrow and getting our pit together..... and my friend Chris Alston Jr (Of Chassisworks fame) is bringing out his SICK F3R Big block 64 Nova..... like 3000 gigahorsepower.....

NA my radials worked pretty well... but we weren't running the kind of HP to really test them. went 1.50 on them but had a few 1.6's in there i think..... but i'd say 75% of the time they hooked, pulled the wheels and off I went... nitrous was an ENTIRELY different story.... :)

One nitrous record holder, eastside's nitrous record (8.23) was done on 295 ET radials... I was there the day it was set.

I went 1.49 on the goodyear 275/60 radial last year off the footbrake, but that was one run and was never able to do better then a 1.5x after that. Off the transbrake they were useless. I can't even imagine how bad they would have been with the jug. Granted the goodyear ones are junk compared to the M/t ones, but the improvment would have had to be so drastic, I can't see where it would have been enough.

Personally, I run a 28x10.5 S et drag, I was thinking about trying the W tire, but honestly the S tires have been so far into the 7's that I see no need, plus alot of people hate on the W tires. If I ever minitub the car so I can run alot bigger tire, I may try going to a set of 31x10.5W's, but that's alot bigger tire so it's a whole different world.

Nice run. That track reminds me of Cecil in Maryland.

09-04-2008, 01:17 AM
Congrats!!!!!!! That is sick!

09-04-2008, 10:32 AM
outlaw your car does like mine when it comes down the fronts move out and in....know the reason? i think this is why madman says toe them in in the front....

09-04-2008, 10:36 AM

The radials like to do wheel stands alot ore than a slick also.

I have been running radials ONLY on my car for about 3 years now, Broken 2 oil pans but we have a good Idea what to do and what not to do now.

09-04-2008, 10:48 AM
Dry nitrous kit?

09-09-2008, 01:05 PM
single stage wet.......

09-10-2008, 10:39 PM
nice wheel stand! lol looks awsome

09-11-2008, 12:43 AM
hehehe.... we went out last weekend for Pinks All Out this time on 28x10.5W ET Drags.... things got uhhhhhhh crazy every pass..... Put down consistent 9.80's all weekend... .86, .89, .82 and then the armdrop pass where we didn't get a timeslip... but here's some of the pics from the weekend. We pretty much have wheelstands down now... :D

Time for some travel limiters looks like your car is getting higher and higher.

I am using a two step and travel limiters and from the few runs I have on 325's the car barely lifts the fronts, maybe 6-8 inches.

09-11-2008, 10:56 PM
How is your front end after popping those massive wheelies? Must have a custom front suspension on that beast, right?

Nice run, 9's are very impressive and fast...

Yeah you turbo guys are lucky as well cuz you hit the tire a bit differently. We're going to put some limiters on it though for a money race we got comin.... i'm thinking the car will probably be about a tenth quicker without the wheelstands.... thanks again.

Just your typical F-body BMR stuff. tubular k-mbr, tubular upper and lower a arms, QA1's and aerospace brakes up front.... front end seems perfect... the key is to NOT LIFT. You have to shift and ride it out with your foot on the floor... comes down pretty soft....

here's a video of the wheelstand at Pinks (I've posted it in other areas but maybe u guys haven't seen it) (

09-12-2008, 03:27 PM
damn outlaw tha was badass!!!!

09-12-2008, 09:49 PM
the pass looked awesome! wish i wouldnt have missed it by 5 minutes

09-12-2008, 10:46 PM
thanks guys. Oh you missed it? I thought you were still in our pits when we rolled the car out from under the EZ Up out of our pits... I know I drove by ppl at the snack bars that looked like they were leaving the lines instead of buying food to go back to their seats LOL!

Glad you were there though. When I got there friday morning I was like "OH SHIT" when I remembered that I had to tell my boy to come get you..... I was oppressed that week leading up to it man cuz I had so much to do...... but i was happy you made it out... Did you have fun overall?????

09-17-2008, 09:30 PM
whats the fastest its been? and no nitrous ever rite?

09-17-2008, 10:40 PM
man that was awesome. what kinda 60 foots do you run usually?

09-18-2008, 12:27 AM
whats the fastest its been? and no nitrous ever rite

No the fastest pass it's been so far was a 9.79@139.9...... on 1 unit jetted for 150hp.... smallest jets that I have..... motor was built for 2-3 kits and 400hp worth of spray....
car runs consistent 10.60's on motor... we're thinking with more play time with the suspension that it's got a 9.6x in it with the same jets.... I've made a total of like 6-7 runs on spray so far....

man that was awesome. what kinda 60 foots do you run usually?

Car has been 1.50 60' on motor.... went 1.40 on spray twice tripping with the front tires, and a 1.50 (that pass in the vid that was obviously on the back tires).... So most likely another 1.40... maybe a 1.399 but no way to tell..... :D

09-18-2008, 09:54 AM
Another 50hp and that thing drags the bumper until you let off!!!

Been there done that.... I shifted and tried to pedal it and it didnt come down until I let off completly .... and it broke a bunch of shit!

Get those limiters on there before you make anymore HP. :)

09-18-2008, 09:57 AM
Yeah, please do. Shit I put mine on the bumper with 150, if I hadn't blipped on the way up it probably would have got all 4 off the ground :eek2: And if I hadn't stabbed it when I did on the way back down, I'd still be trying ot piece shit back together I'm sure.

09-18-2008, 11:55 AM
yeah we did a wheelstand at the single best time (right in front of Rich Christensen) to get on TV... So we'll see around thanksgiving when the sonoma episode comes on TV if I got some TV coverage. We're pretty sure it'll make the cut cuz it was one of the few cars out of 450 with nose to the sky wheelstands....

But you're right i'm done with that business.... I'm ordering the limiters in the next few weeks prior to taking the car out again. Going to put the fronts at like 9-10 ish and put the limiters in the middle and go from there..... can limiters cause the car to blow the back tires off due to not enough weight????? Cause I was wondering how much of a balancing act it is to get enough weight over the back tires to hook and taking TOO much weight transfer out of it causing excessive spin.....

09-18-2008, 12:52 PM
They can make the car spin if they're too tight. I ended up putting mine one hole looser then madman told me to start, and the shocks are at the same setting they were at... but then again the car is still in the 1.4 60 foot range too, so it's not working right IMO yet.

09-18-2008, 06:11 PM
I figure i'll put the fronts on like 6 or so (they were at 2 without limiters) and then adjust them to the middle hole to limit travel to like 3-4" I guess...

I've been taking advice from Madman and my chassis guy Theo Dec from Wizard Racing and it's seemed to work so far according to my back bumper.. LOL.....

So i guess i'll just continue listening to the pros...

Here a full wheelie - only 150 shot out of the hole - mine when I was "doing" nitrous. No front limiters - stock bottom end; h/c; TH-400; 12-bolt; run was Memorial Day 2005. Best time of the day 10.169; worse run 10.171 (8 rounds) Sad day, took the engine out

Lesson: get the front limiters NOW!!
