Starter motor - broken nylon gears
I did a search and didn't seem to find anything relevant.
Wondering if this is a common problem or not.
I bought a used 5.3 LM7 mostly complete and have it on an engine stand for testing. It was missing the starter so I bought one - "New Automotive" part N6482.
I got the engine fired up tonight on a custom ECU I'm working on developing, so I went and grabbed some beer. On trying it again to video it, I got a minor kick-back and then the starter was broken!
This is the second starter I've destroyed in two weeks. On disassembling the first one I found that the annulus gear in the reduction set was made from nylon and all of the teeth had ripped off. The second starter appears to be the same because the solenoid throws out the pinion, the motor turns but the flywheel is stationary.
This is a PITA for me because these parts are only available from a specialist in the UK. (No Autozone etc.)
I am considering buying part SUM-820320 from Summit - any experiences on that one? The sales blurb claims it is good for hi-compression motors, so I am hoping it has some decent parts inside it to prevent this pathetic premature failure.

The starters I have broken are supposed to be standard replacement items, they seem exceptionally fragile though.
I've not decided what car the engine will be going in, possibly an Olds Cutlass for the moment.
