Default Which cam to upgrade to...This one too small...

Ok guys, I rebuilt my motor last year and cammed it but didnt know a ton about the LT1's at the time...I chose a cam that I felt was ok but not too big at that point in time.....the Edelbrock 2108

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...8&autoview=sku

the motor is now a 355 with the stock bottom end......just new crank and pistons...... I have 7.2 Chromemoly Manley Pushrods........Crane Cams Dual Spring Kit 10308-1..........Crane Gold 1.6RR.......and new lifters

I dont want to have to change anything else as far as th evalve train goes, but want something a lil bigger with more power.....The 2108 is a lil small and prob not the best cam option for th LT1 and I know that now...But I didnt know it then...

I have the valvetrain to support it and I also have the usual 3200 stall, CAI Intake, Longtubes, GMMG, new opti... etc...so all supporting mods are no prob

So what choice of cams do you guys think will work with my current setup so I will only need to swap the cam and not have to swap anything else....I just wanna buy a new cam and install it...

On the dyno it put down 308/320 tuned through the stall on a dynojet...

I dont really drive the car a ton but I dont wanna run the motor over about 6k as I dont wanna grenade anything....

If it were your car and you were gonna put in a new cam what would it be...Im trying to figure out my choices....Top end power isnt as important to me as is useable power under the band, since I dont push it all the way to the limit anyways, I dont wanna have to spin it past 6kish to make my power.....

i'm still running stock cam, but from all the research i have done i would say comp 305, or the lingenfilter 211/219. maybe even go with a comp 503 although its on the bigger side of what you want. also the crane 227 would be a good choice.

I like the cc503. Thats what im going with when i can afford a cam swap. I think you do have to spin it to about 6300 rpms though.

i love my advanced induction 226/234. awesome power and its very smooth with a nice lope, but once again, maybe a little bigger than you want. it is very similar to the cc503

Seems like what you have is pretty much on par for what your looking for. Sure its definetly not the best cam out there but swapping it out for say an LPE 211/219 or Crane 227 wouldn't IMO be all that worth it. I think the only worthwhile route would be getting a custom grind that works with your springs and whatnot.

If I were you I would probably run the cc503..seems like a good cam, it's nothing compared to the cc306 and gm847 as far as high rpm's go.. From what i've read the 503 has alot of useable power. But like said about, if you're wanting to get best cam for you, custom grind is route to take.

yeah I guess thats an avenue I will need to look at....although I wanted something off the shelf...as I dont wanna go too radical....the cam I have actually works well for my setup...mild and not too big....through the 3200 stall 308/320 really isnt that bad for an auto..translates t around 340/360 at the fly...I already got used to the power it has I reckon and I want a lil more...I am not gonna do anymore head work than whats done so a bigger cam was my option..unless I spray it...

I was just trying to see what the general consensus was as to what to upgrade to..I have entertained the 503 and am still entertaining it

I just sent an email to ADVANCED INDUCTIONS and will see what they recommend as well thanx guys

The Edelbrock cam is a single pattern. look at every other cam recommended and they have more exhaust duration. That is because the gen 1 and 2 smallblocks are generally weak on the exhaust side when compared to the intake.

The Edelbrock cam is not "too small" it is just a bad choice.

The full Edelbrock package makes less at the flywheel than a good setup does at the rear wheels.

I like the Advanced Induction cams, installed a couple with better than average results and wonderful long term reliability.

If your worried about going too radical I would also check out LE or AI. They can easily set you up with something that will match exactly what your looking for.

are kidding me??? 847 thats old technology dude. j/k

yeah were installing a 503 in kolts ta sometime this month. 503 should be very suitable for your motor. it drives very well and makes good low/mid range power. but.... a lloyd grind cam should do wonders for that 355.

I have the cc503 cam in my car. I have all supporting mods plus bumped compression along with it.

My car put down 351rwhp and 357rwtq. I love the feel of the cam. It kicks hard down low and pulls strong to a bit over 6k. I wanted a lower end cam for the street since I DD my car. Eventually I will throw in a custom grind cam, but for now I'm enjoying the power...much better than the V6 that used to be in the car.

CC 503 is hard to beat for a catalog cam. Good street manors and pulls to about 6200 RPM and allows the bottom end to live linger. Once you cross 230 duration mark, the extra RPM can knock a stock bottom end in the head pretty quickly.

well I talked to Phil and he recommends that the valvetrain be redone and the crane springs be upgraded to something than can handle a lil more power like some pacs or something of that nature....so we will see...I am not sure what I wanna do..maybe save up and do a new cam and a head package at the same time

The 10308s should be more then enough for the 503 unless they are worn with a ton of miles...

no the valvetrain is brand new with less than 8k miles I would say..if even that....he said the 10308's are really limiting me with only 117lbs....if I go with his custom grind I would need to upgrade...those are fine for the 503....he was speaking of the custom grind

Ive got the 226/234 and it is a very driveable cam. My tune is FAR from perfect right now and I have very little surge. The lope is great and it still has bottom end power. My first impression was that I could have gone bigger so I would recommend it for you.
