Default Your input on this turbo

I'm currently working on an LSx powered 69 camaro that will be turbo powered at the end of the project. I'm putting together a 427ci LSX block based power plant with some new trick flow 235cc 18 bolt heads. I was wondering if anyone with some turbo experience here had an idea if this turbo I'm looking at on ebay was a good deal. Thanks in advance for the input.

Fixed the link...sorry

Some people call them 6 bolt heads...standard LS heads have 10 head bolts (that actually clamp around the cyl) these heads have two extra bolts on the inner and outter of each cyl. for a total of 18 bolts that exert clamping force around the cyl.

Call Precision. Stay away from that thing.

You could get a smaller unit that would make the same power with a faster spool. Check out Precisions 94mm Billet wheel turbo. Awesome compressor wheel technology. We've had really good luck with it. In fact, a car I know of (SBF) went faster/quicker with it than a Turbonetics 98mm.

A friend of mine was also looking at that turbo. But was intended for a 509ci BBC. So is the turbo just crap, or is a 427ci LSX not big enough to spool it quickly? Would it be ok for the larger BBC or just forget about it and buy something else...

That’s funny… The guys over at Majestic quoted me a built TV81 with the same specs for my 402.

They said the small .96 A/R and turbine would spool quickly. ROTORYOTA on the Turboforum runs a TV8101 on a SBC and makes over 1000 to the ground / full boost by 3500 and it has the larger 1.23 housing.

What size compressor wheel and turbine / housing would you recommend Shawn?

It all depends on what hp he wants and what he is going to do with the car.I can tell you this, that turbo on ebay will def not work well on a 427 cid engine no matter what-it's set up for a much smaller engine-probably in the 360cid range

Hey cool, that's my turbo! This turbo will spool crazy fast on a 427. Are you looking to build a strip only car or DD? If it's a full blown 427 drag strip build this turbo's exhaust housing would be too small and would limit hi RPM / topend power on the exhaust side. The compressor wheel is definately big enough and is good for 125 lbs/min or 1250HP. I had this turbo built for a 408 DD... PM if you have any more questions.

I got in touch with Udo at MJM and he said that the turbo would start making boost on a 408 around 2700RPM and full spool by 4000RPM. He also said it would work well on a 427 with earlier spool times but would need a 60MM wastegate to bypass the excess exhaust gas above 6000RPM's or you would run into backpressure issues and boost creep.
