Default Emmisions!! OBD2?

To start off i have a 96 trans am ws6, i posted a while back and didnt really get alot of replies so i hope somebody can help me out.

PROBLEM: My car will not connect to the emissions computer, nor will it connect to a OBD2 scanner and this is kind of a problem seeing as if i dont pass emmisions i cant drive my car....which i bought about a month ago. I have power coming out of the obd2 on the far right bottom prong and nowhere else, when i touch one of the upper prongs with my test light my electric fans come on??? which i dont think is suppose to happen. I heard from the grapevine that is someone had a programmer installed on the car, your car will not beable to connect to anything else until you take the programmer off...is this true? and if it is how do i fix it? and yes i did check all of my fuses and triple checked them they are all good. So my main question is does anybody have any idea whats going on? or should i just take it to a shop and have them rape me with labor charges

any help would be greatly appreciated...help get another F-body on the road!!!!!

It is fairly common for people to put OBD1 computers in OBD2 cars, because the tuning and datalogging software is cheaper.
Can you get us the part number off the pcm??

If the computer has the service number 16188051, you have the OBDI computer. 16214399 is the OBDII service number, which is what it should have in it.

The OBD1 computer plugs right in to the underhood wiring, the underdash ALDL port is left untouched.

well i think i found my problem....service number is 16188051 so this means i have an obd1??? now how the hell do i pass emmisions? I live in wisconsin and they just passed a law that they dont use the sniffer anymore on vehicles 95 and older...which means if u have a95 or older you dont have to pass emmisons...i have a 96 and its suppose to have the obd2...so does this mean i have to put an obd2 in it? Thanks for help so far.

You know most guys that live down in the emissions areas of Wisconsin just claim the car is kept further north.

To pass you will need an OBD2 pcm with the proper programming. I might be able to help you find one. I actually have one but do not want to part with it and while I can reprogram OBD1 pcms I can not program my spare 96 OBD2 for your f-body.

I live a little west of Appleton, no testing up here.

Well the problem is i took a loan on the car and im young so there is a lean on it....they gave me my stickers and registerd the car at the bank and a week later i got a letter saying i need to pass emmisions, i dont know for sure but im guessing they wont let me register it in another county because of them reasons. So i think im **** out of luck...whats an obd2 pcm and tuning cost roughly?

Should be able to find a pcm for maybe $60 and get the dealer to reflash for your car for maybe $80.
There are professional tuners who might be able to help on the tuning end, cost more if you want custom programming but they might be able to do a stock reflash cheap.

If you go to the dragstrip this fall and see a mostly red Caprice going too fast stop over and say hi. I should get down to Great Lakes Dragaway a few times this fall.

if your car is just "bolt ons" a stock PCM for 96 for you car will work. Might try a junk yard.

if you can't find one for a fbody 96 than you would have to have it flashed as mentioned.

ebay, craig list possible....

Can somebody just loan you an OBD2 to pass emissions then just give it back? Also here in Northern IL they just plug it in and check to make sure there are no codes. No more dyno or sniffing tailpipes here anymore. Is that what they do there too???

You could also just say you moved?? They are not going to check with the bank.

If you can find a loaner pcm you will need to drive on it for a day or two so that it has verified correct opperation of everything. That is something they put in OBD2 so people could not just clear codes down the block before the test.

Thanks for all the help guys you dont know how much i appreciate it, i would still be lost haha. but anyway yes i could say i moved but i think it would just be easier to pass emmisions and be done with it, im gonna start calling junkyards today and see if anyone has one. also the only thing done to my car is exhaust as far as i know, so maybe ill beable to get away with stock pcm tune? does the obd2 install and use same plugs as obd1? so all i have to do it pop it in? Thanks again!!

If reprogramming you could get one out of any 96 LT1 or L99 car including Caprice, Roadmaster, Fleetwood and Impala, the L99 was the base engine in the Caprice only is basically a smaller displacement LT1.

To get away with no reprogramming you will need an M6 f-body.

I sent a friend down your way an email, he might have a pcm for you. If he does I will send you a PM with contact info.
