Quick question guys. What is the use of da idler pulley?
Yeah, what use does the idler pulley do? The one near the alternator? My car needs to be driven tomorrow and i can walk to da 24hr autozone to get a shorter belt. For i wish to use a shorter belt.(51.5in) just to get to work tomorrow. https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...ley+power+pump Look at the pic in the early posts of the shorter belt. Any negative things i may encounter? Btw i haven't used my ac in years.

Well at first I was thinking that picture was your setup, but I am assuming its just for an example. The idler pulley helps make greater contact by helping rap the belt around the accessory (alt, WP, PS, AC etc.)pullies for less slippage and routing. If you are running N/A and can get a good wrap around your WP without it slipping You might be ok. That would be my biggest concern. And for the most part its only a bandaide to get you to work if you are close. Set it up on your car in the driveway, rev it up a couple times installed like that (if you can route it like that) and watch to make sure your belt makes contact and does not slip on the WP. Would suck if you did this lost efficiency in your WP and run way too hot. I would not recommend it being that you are in a hurry. If this was a project your are trying to do with alot more time for trial and error then maybe for the long run, but not short term.
Where are you looking for a belt? I get mine from AdvanceAuto (its closer and cheap) and use a Dayco Poly Cog (PN 5060790) This very same belt is used for the following cars
Jeep 2.5L, 4.0L
GM 5.7L
GM 2.8L
Hyundai 2.7L, 2.5L
Kia 2.7L, 2.5L
Chrysler 2.5L
Those engines include the following
1998-2002 Chevrolet Camaro
1987-1991 Chevrolet S10
1987-1990 Chevrolet S10 Blazer
1996-2002 Dodge Dakota
1987-1990 GMC S15
1987-1989 GMC S15 Jimmy
1991-1991 GMC Sonoma
2001-2006 Hyundai Santa Fe
1999-2005 Hyundai Sonata
2003-2006 Hyundai Tiburon
2005-2005 Hyundai Tucson
1996-2000 Jeep Cherokee
1995-2002 Jeep Wrangler
2001-2005 Kia Optima
1998-2002 Pontiac Firebird
Most these belts can be had for like 20-26 bucks. Someone around you should have one I would think. Its too common for a blet unless you have a u/d pulley or something. Goodluck

So when would one know if the reservoir is shot? I have a crack where the reservoir connects to the power steering pump. The other day i dropped it and two plastic pieces came out. I believe the cracked part is sheathed by the power steering pump.
