Midwestern Members - Purdue guys....

I've seen some nice cars in the area, and just wanting to hopefully start a thread with some guys at Purdue, or Lafayette area. Maybe we get together some night, or go for a cruise.

Purdue does have a car club. There is a group of guys that meet at the BK over on Teal Rd .

I'm up for a weekend cruise. Something on a Friday or Saturday evening. I have a 40 or so minute route that's kinda fun to drive out in the country west of campus. If you all would like to join sometime, we could do that and then get dinner somewhere.

I have a blue ws6 on campus and I have a buddy with a red lt1 t/a. I'm sure he'll chime in...

I've seen a bunch of cars there before, but assumed it was a bunch of highschoolers.. When do you guys meet up there?

id like to come to a meet or go on a cruise but my car is back at home in my parents garage :(

yea im for sure down for it... car will be getting some work done on saturday (this coming sat.) but i wouldn't be opposed to a sunday cruise then dinner or other days might work too.. i got baseball every day from 3:30-6:30 except saturdays.

I have no idea if its an every Saturday thing. But if something hooks up, I'll let you know, and we can go from there.

I'm a lafayette guy going to school at Purdue. I have a minor bolt on ws6 and would be up for crusing anytime on weekends. I prefer to go out on windy fun roads instead of crusing through town or campus. I like to drive the car, I don't care so much for the cruising campus and strutting your stuff. I have also seen the guys at Burger king, but it seems to be the same guys/cars every weekend and I assumed it was a bunch of High school kids. "blackformula01" your 40 minute route sounds fun, I would be up for it. I will be going to Indy for the big firebird/camaro show they are having in a couple weeks, so I am going to pass on the crusie to indy. Anyone else going to the Big show in Indy on19,20,21? I will be heading up there after class on friday, around 5p ish if anyone wants to cruise there together.

So is anyone getting together on friday or sat evening sometime?

19th is the day of the "Big Indy Show" There are going to be a lot of F-body's there, including me. So I can't do the 19th, Ill just say I am good for any friday or saturday evening except for the 19 &20th. "Blackformula01" see if you can flag down the guy driving the white ws6 with some sort of stripes on the hood. His car is lowered and I am dying to figure out what spring/shock combo he has and how it rides. I plan on lowering mine over winter, but I am not going the koni route, thats just too much for me right now. I plan on getting KYB AGX's and strano springs and I am hoping like hell I can find someone around here running the KYB AGX's so I can see if the ride is going to be too harsh.

26th sounds good with me! Yeah, the white WS6 always sits by carry quad. Ed, I did decide to take the WS6 out tonight. I bought a beater that I normally drive on a daily basis, 00 ford escort zx2 a nasty looking gold color. The WS6 comes out about once a week. I was near chauncy around 9:05pm. I was headed over to campus to clean the Regions bank right across from Macke arena. I clean it mon-fri. Good way to tell my car is I have c6 wheels on it, and it sits waaaaaaaay to high with those wheels on. Also, its pretty loud when I have the cutout open. It was open tonight, Cody V.

yep, cody here. I was taking that route for a while, but not anymore. Could be me, but there is a few other over there. Just look for the c6 wheels and loud exhaust, unless I have her closed in which case the car is pretty quiet.

My car sat at home most of the week, I drove the daily escort to school. I had big plans of getting the WS6 out and going cruising on saturday. It's just about emprty on gas and when I saw the price of gas, I decided to leave her at home and just clean her up. I spent about 4 hours just cleaning the interior. Looks better than new, and its ready for the show come friday. Here are a few pics of the ride so you guys might be able to spot me sometime. Post some pics of your cars too!

S.O.B.!!! Thats one clean looking ws6!! WOW. Paint looks amazing. And it's the perfect color.... My driveway looks like a funeral home with all my black vehicles... Except the bird... Which may someday be converted.

Cody, Austin, beautiful looking cars. I'm really excited to get all of us together on the 26th. I took Eric (LT1Formula26) on the route I wanted to take, and he liked it as well. I hope you all enjoy it you are willing to try it out.

I loved black when it was clean, and it may be worth it to you, but I drove a black car DD and it killed me. I am envious of a nice black car though, because nothing is ever going to look as nice.

Thanks for the compliments, but the paint looks pretty used up now. A couple of those pics were taken before last winter. I had no other car so I daily drove the WS6 all winter and it tore the paint up pretty good. It's still in allright shape, but it does have a lot of blemishes now.

Yeah I had it for a little while last year at the end of the year and parked it at Delta Upsilon... my friends lived there and when we were drivin back to school in his car his SC decided to seize up so I got a free parking spot cuz I had to drive down :D ...If it wasn't there it was at Harrison or cruisin around town

Austin that was me...You guys were working parking and I was coming in to run in really quick and those cops told me to slow down when i crossed the street lol.

Eric, did you get everything done to your car that you wanted to this weekend?

yea...to make a long story short, i balanced all the tires, painted the calipers red, fixed the header leak, and installed a wheel hub...and then driving into mcdonalds I didn't see a curb and I hit it at like 5mph but it sounded rough, so I went to the shop today and jacked it up and checked everything out...seems fine, but after driving a bit, when I am stopped but still in drive, I get this wierd rattle behind the console on the carpet and I am not sure if it is from a heat shield being messed up or my Y pipe...Y pipe seemed fine when I tugged on it with the car up at the shop, but who knows...I dunno, I am doing a cooling fan switch mod this weekend possibly and checking into that rattle more. But it is running ok, so I dunno.

Nate, Holy shit! I gues I hadn't realized you had an LS3 in your firebird. I just thought you had a plain old 92 firebird. I also watched your 20-100 video and that is just beyond comprehension, ha ha. Your car is incredibly quicK. What kind of power are you putting down? I am still trying to get over that video.

Not sure how much power I'm putting down. I'd imagine my Fly Wheel power to be right around 525. I know a couple guys that have exact cam specs, etc. and they are getting about 570. and getting high 10's in the quarter. pretty sure I'm NOT there... However... The car pulls like a S.O.B at 4.5K and up! Car is a little sluggish under 3.5. I actually just ordered a set of M/T ET Streets, which will help drastically and hopefully I can try a good launch... Also I think with some fine tune work. (Probably greenlight motorsports in Kokomo) I think we can get a little more power out of the lower end.
If I can keep the car quiet, it suprises a few people.

I want a ride in that car ^^.

By the way, Eric. DO WORK! You got a lot accomplished this weekend. I am quiet jealous. Also, I am starting to post notes on cars in parking lots. Creeper, I know.

when did you get the C6 wheels, I'm trying to remember if I ever saw it with them. Yea i drive a crap 96 grand am but i care about it enough to park way out too, thats how i stumbled upon your car. The one time I didn't and i got my bumper messed up by a burgundy buick, and the cops and security did nothing to get the tapes checked before they were erased even though i reported it.

hey I just saw this thread...I've seen the white ws6 w/ stripes around campus a few times...also seen a few red lt1 trans ams..and there is a red z28 w/ 5 spoke rims that lives in my apt complex...I'm down for a get together but I'll be at Indy this weekend. I can tell you this right now...my car is a dd w/ 150k on her so when you see her in person be nice :)

Car I raced ^. A guy in PAPA's dad's. Cammed/full exhaust Z06.... Made me drool.... I stayed ahead for 3/4 of the track.... but as fast as he went by me it was well worth it to lose that race, just to see it :D. hahaha

Yeah, its probably me haha...I have an 02 car. I don't have any exhaust on it. It will start being a really fun car after college, bur for right now, it just has a lid and fast 78 on it from my old formula. Its nice to see another blue one on campus! It is my favorite color on them. Hopefully you can make it to the cruise on the 26th! I think it would be cool to get a lot of cars!

Turnandburn and transamws6_97 please join us on the 26th if you can. We are meeting at Ross Ade Stadium, 7PM sharp...doing a nice little cruise in the country, then going to eat somewhere like Dogs and Suds... Should be a nice short little outing that can maybe become more regular!

Yeah, its probably me haha...I have an 02 car. I don't have any exhaust on it. It will start being a really fun car after college, bur for right now, it just has a lid and fast 78 on it from my old formula. Its nice to see another blue one on campus! It is my favorite color on them. Hopefully you can make it to the cruise on the 26th! I think it would be cool to get a lot of cars!

For sure on them being fun cars, but I'm not sure it was me now. I was driving on the west side of wiley that day, but I actually wasn't in the parking lot. Maybe there are 3 of us? It could have been though...I'm a 5th year pharm major, so I took math 4 years ago...

Either way, I'm excited with the number of people showing interest in this. Hopefully the weather is nice, and if its looking to be financially difficult, I'm sure you guys can ride shotgun with some other people going. I have had a few people message me on facebook about it, so we'll hope for the best!

so basically your spark plug wires are arching? from the boot or the wire? do you have headers and are they touching? sounds like its time for some new wires or some heat boots

can't tell, but the plugs are new and the wires are old...plus i had overheating issues, so i think during that, the wires were bad...but there is other stuff that always comes up and i have never payed so much money to maintain a vehicle before. I think I might have to sell it and when I get a job after college, ill get an ls1 for the summers. It sucks I know...but what am I gonna do ya know? Does anyone have a jack or something where I could use it to put the wires in when I get them?

PS. I have heat shields over all but number 7

i got a jack and stands at my apt but my suggestion is just go to autozone and pick up a set of ramps for like 30 bucks...much easier and quicker plus my jack barely fits under my car

What is going on with this car? Eric, this ball is in your court. You know how much you've spent on the car. The con's are that if you sell it, you probably wont be able to buy a nicer F-Body for what you sell it for, you will never get out of it what you paid for the car and what you put into it, but on the positives, you wont be dumping more money into this car. Who knows how much more that car will eat out of your wallet?

It depends. I would get it running right again. Just because, you could get $3,500 for it if its not running right, but by doing a $200 repair you could get $5,000 for it. People do pay for convenience. It is easier to start high and go lower. Most people expect to barter, so take this into account. You just can't be too extreme. Also, the market is really slow for these cars right now, so if it takes a little while, don't be too worried. Thirdly, just be honest with the person buying it. Answer their questions to the best of your knowledge. I know you, and at least you'll be able to live with that.

it really doesnt sound like that big of a problem....could be simple wires or as bad as your opti...either way ignition problems aren't that expensive...ive replaced my opti, plugs, wires, and icm for about 450ish

As for the market being slow right now.... It is VERY slow... I have had my car up for sale for a lllloooonnnggg time and just keep dropping the price and no one is taking it... I know I dont have it overpriced, but just nothings selling right now... so if you decide to sell, be prepared to sell cheap. or wait awhile

yea i know it could be opti, and i know the wires need to be replaced for sure, but i still can't afford even a 200 dollar repair right now...and on top of that, my parents were unemployed for almost a year and a half and my brother is now in college too. plus winter will be hell with my car. ed, i have it listed for 3800 and that includes new wires...so hopefully it will sell. the blue book on it in the condition it is in is 4300.

Best of luck, Eric. When it sells, you will be able to get something a little more reliable and then once you have some financial backing in a year be able to afford the car that you can really be proud of.

so much fun...the g8 was definitely surprising for a big 4 door.....didnt really hit the twisties that hard in it but when they let us open it up...i floored it and first gear didnt impress me too much but once it hit second it fuckin took off. and the c6 is probably the favorite car ive ever driven...the think sticks to the road so great and it was really fun w/ the paddle shifter

If you still have the car you should bring it out. Maybe even if you don't come on the cruise. Either way you should still come with or without your car. If you want to ride along, you can ride shotgun in the slow 3rd gen.

I am not 100% positive on the turn out. I have fliered a lot of cars (probably close to 15-20 cars in the last 2 weeks). I would say we'll have anywhere between 5-10 cars. Here is who I have as confirmed coming:

I have a red lt1 Ta that is always parked right by bar-barry. I see fbods all the time around campus and think it is an awesome idea to try to organize something! unfortunately I cant make it on friday as my frat has barn dance....but any other time I would love to go cruising somewhere. I love the car man, very nice. I like those rims a lot too. I'm considering getting some of those or firehawk rims. I like both of them a lot.

If you get Firehawk rims, let me know, because I would like to see them on a car like mine. I have always loved those, but I think once I'm out of college a set of CCW 505's will be on there...

I was next to last in line, and the view and sounds were great from back there!!! Loved hearing those lsx's open up. All the different colors made it easy on the eyes, and all the different set ups made for some awesome sound. I only got into my car a couple times so I could hear everyone else.

Meeting up with the Indy crowd would be cool. I know James, from the Indy people thread. He's invited me down a couple times, but never gone. Whats everyone think? affordable? not? to long? maybe we wanna just keep it local. lets open it up..... thoughts?

I could do an indy cruise, no problem. Whoever has there foot in the door with the indy crowd needs to figure out when they are all getting together that way we could make the drive on a night with good turnout. I don't think you are asking too much. I think its just the market. Have you tried EBay? I know you can set the reserve, and let it go from there. But its a very nice car, and its obviously been very well maintained throughout its life.

I think your 13.4 is a fair price for the car, but these cars have just dropped soo much in price that its hard to get good money from them. If you want a quick sale, I would expect to go as low as 11-12k, if you wait, I am sure you will eventually get around 13k for it.

hey guys, this is Chris from Friday. I didn't realize there were so many very nice f-bodys on campus. It was great meeting all of you as well. I ran back to Indy Saturday night down 65 around 2 am which provided for a nice cruise, however upon regularly checking fluids before I headed back up I found oil in the coolant. Although its only that and that no coolant is in the oil, the bird was left at home, assuming a blown head gasket, to get some attention and a check up before I have time to work on it when I get back over break in a few weeks.

At this point I am without wheels but still game if we all get together before break and someone has a free seat.

I would be up for going to the track on friday, although not with my car. The clutch is slipping soo bad that I would be lucky to run a 14. If you have a couple extra seats I would ride along with you and help pay for gas. If not, I could make the trip in the trans am and follow you guys to the track. If you have a camera or something, I would be more tha willing to get some footage of you running it at the track. Let me know

Haha, nhendrick I would have loved to bring the IROC back up, it has been my baby for the past 5 years, but reliability was what made me get the 98 bird back this past year at Spring Break.

The 305 in it has 140k miles and has some moisture problems noticeable under the valve covers, probably could use a rebuild and it would purr. With an almost new Rochester Quadrajet it runs decently well, however my dad was driving it on and off a month ago to work and the car just would die on him and not restart. Its intermittent and a loose or corroded ground somewhere is what we are suspecting. With school though I haven't had the time to check it, we all know how that is, and I wouldn't trust it for returning it to my current ride at this time. For a 87 it has a sharp looking exterior with no rust, and the exhaust I put on a year ago sounds sweet but now I have also been told that the pipe back from the Y also split. With a set of Bridgestone Potenza's I put on it last winter, its the only car I would completely trust in rain and snow/ice. It is an awesome car but it really shouldn't be someones DD as it has been for me, at least as the car is now. It has plenty of potential but limitations on time and money are what they are.

I haven't been very actively trying to sell it too hard yet as I have had a checklist of things on the car I have been fixing up. However I am hoping to get 3500-4000 out of it, knowing I have spent probably double that to keep it running and the condition it is in.

The bird if it is a head gasket, should be just replacing the gasket at the stage I have caught it at. There was no difference in heat or performance so I think the engine itself should be fine. However I am dreading that it looks like I will have to pull the engine in this gen. in order to do that serious of a tear down because of that lip that the engine is tucked under in 4th gens. Anyone have much experience or comments on this?
I mean I have the lift and everything I would need, just we all know how fun an engine pull is if it isn't necessary.

Depending on what gets done over break I will either get the camaro running a little more reliably, get the bird fixed depending on what is found and its cost, or drive a 87 beater supra up I have, if i get the head gasket and arp studs I have for it installed. Pretty much for me to have a ride after break I will be putting in some serious wrench time over break. XD

That all aside I would be down for goin' and watching at the strip, if anyone had a spare seat to get there I could help with gas.

Chris.... Sounds like a great car for another lsx swap. If you could find a donor engine and tranny, you'd probably have another 1500 in misc parts. My bird is nice, but those IROC's have such a great factory look.

haha yea, ever since I got the IROC an ls1 swap was what I wanted to do, but with school and everything money doesn't flow as much as I would like. Then I looked for something newer and more reliable and fell in love with the 4th gen firebird inside and out. I got a regular bird for the insurance, the gas mileage. It will be a while until I start building it up. I got the bird with making it a sleeper in mind. Sometime down the road I would love to do an lsx or so drop in it. As it is still more a dd than anything practicality takes first in most cases for now.

Let me talk with my girlfriend to see if we have plans. If not, I have an extra adult seat and 3 kiddie seats in that Ranger.

get a pair of fel pro header gaskets...best there is and i believe you can pick them up at either advance or autozone...btw do you have headers or manifolds? depending on what is going on i might be able to help on sunday but if you have manifolds i am NOT looking forward to messing w/ plugs n wires

i have the felpro gaskets on it and i had headers.

hmm that's weird...when you put the headers on w/ the gasket did you tighten the bolts from the middle out? because thats really how you are supposed to do it to get the most benefit from the gaskets

i didn't put the headers on and when the gasket was resealed, i don't know what order they tightened it in.

hmm that is why i all the work i can myself...so I'm assuming your not running over the valve cover since you have a set of msd wires? and are these precut or cut to fit? doesnt really matter as cutting to fit isnt hard at all just takes more time. and if i do decide to do plugs i sure hope you have an slp plug socket...it makes it 1000x easier to do

lol no i don't have a socket, and they don't go over the valve covers and the are precut. i hope this makes my car stop running like shit and stop smelling like gas. i hope there isn't a deeper problem. it is like i don't have pickup and the car sounds like it is trying so hard and the car vibrates sporadically at idle.

Great news, the bird was in the shop today for a full check on the engine and it is good to go.

What happened was, and this may be something we could all use to know for future reference, the standard DEXCOOL coolant for our cars has a very small amount of a oil in it. With age and heat the chemical compound breaks down and the oil separates somewhat from the other components. This can give a similar appearance in the coolant to as if there was a blown head gasket.

I'll be bringing it back after break. Soon enough it will be new brakes, wheels, and tires.

I am still game for goin' to the track tomorrow. If anyone could give me a lift (Nate, Ed, whoever) it would be appreciated. Time for leaving is no issue for me, and I live at Cary. If this works for any one, PM me with what time and I'll give you my cell. Thank you in advance.

People still use DEXCOOL? I highly suggest against it....Over time it actual gunks up into like a gel...there has been so many people with problems with DEXCOOL. Actually there is a class action lawsuit against them I believe from GM. Anyways anyone that has that in their coolant system needs to flush it out PRONTO

Turns out the roommate is headed back to Indy so I think I am gonna take advantage of it and get a ride back with him, get some work done on the cars, and drive the bird back up Sunday. Changes in plans this coming week and a need for a set of wheels have made that into a priority.

I am taking the wheels/tires off to sell them and not going to purchase another set until next summer. The place that I am storing it at says it has to be on wheel/tires, no jackstands.

Great night at the track. After about 7 or 8 trips down the track I finally realized that I really needed to heat the piss out of the tires to grab. Once I did that the car started putting down some good numbers. I went from low 12's @ 2.2 60's to a couple of 1.80-1.87 60''s and instantly ran 11.80's. With that said I tried a few different RPM launches to figure out what worked best.
The things that sucks..... I lost clutch pressure... and was done racing for the night... I ended up going to the parking lot, starting the car in 4th, and drove it home. I'll keep you guys updated on the problem... Very odd problem, that has me puzzled. No fluid leaking ANYWHERE, res. still full, just no pressure. Now. the thing that sucks is I was just starting to really feel what the car could do. My last run when I noticed no pressure was at the top end of 3rd when I tried to shift to 4th. So I instantly let out. numbers on that run were 1.67 60ft 7.34 1/8th at 94.5 and coasted across the line at 97 at 11.9................ This is the thing that sucks!!! That run was on beat for a sub 11.5 run..... VERY FRUSTRATING. In all the night went pretty well. I learned a TON about driving the car, launching, shifting etc.

Thanks Ed, I had the car out all night tonight and it was loads of fun! I love when it gets really cool at night, the car runs like a bat out of hell and the tires have no traction. I am used to a little loss of traction as I initially hit 2nd and mostly through 1st, but tonight there was "NO" traction at all and its was all over the place until mid 3rd. It was soo fun, I was driving my ass off tyring to keep it going straight. I can't believe how much of a difference a little cold air makes.

ed, got the wires and plugs replaced...runs much better, but we discovered a clogged cat, rocker arm needs to be adjusted/lifter noise. the guy is a genius! he had a lot of cool cars and got a chance to really learn a lot from him. his ls1tech name is jarretthise, if you have any issues i would talk to him about it...he knows his shit. Anyways, we couldn't tackle to cat so i need to get it taken off by someone...but don't know where to go!

yea that is what im trying to do but i don't know where to get that pipe because i would need an adapter for it and i don't have any tools to take the cat off. I just need someone to do it.

not sure how the single cats work but just take a sawzall and chop it off and weld a pipe in place..once again ive never checked out a single cat exhaust system for the lt1 so idk if there is a special piece you need but i dont see the problem w/ just welding in a straight pipe
