Default 6.6 Duramax into my T-56 f-body Trans am PICS!! ??????

I've been playing with the idea of putting a 6.6 Duramax into my Trans am.

I would be very nice to get 30+ MPG hwy (my truck gets 22 so a car should get better??) , then pull into the strip flash a tune in it or flip a tune switch and have a 500+ rwhp 700+rwt on tap. And that's with a stock dmax, add some mods and get a lot more power!!!!!!

A very strong t-56 would be a must!!! Viper hardened shafts ect.......
I would have to mount a intercooler in it, that's no big deal.
Fuel lines pumps and things would have to change.
Probably would need custom motor mounts.
Possibly a trans adapter?
The turbo would probably have to be moved so that it would fit under the cowl.
Dash would have to be fixed for the tach ect..

A few things I don't know;

1. Will a dmax bolt to a t-56?
2. Can the frame of a car handle the amount of torque a diesel can put out?
3. would a dmax fit into the engine bay of a f-body???

Any info on the subject would be great!!! Just somthing I'm thinking about now, just gathering info to see if its worth looking into farther. Thanks

Will this Engine fit into this Car?????

nothing wrong with the 454. just a idea that sounds like fun!

I drive 2 duramax trucks and you woulden't belive the power they have in a heavy truck!

Also I like the idea bacause no one else has done it.

It would be cool..............

On a serious note it may invovle ALOT of custom fab. Including a full reworking of the front suspension, drive train( if you could use the t-56 at all), more wiring then you could fathom, and that is ALOT fo torque to throw at our chassis.

But good luck

PS: the 454 is kick ***

I don't think it'll work because of the cowl. Maybe in the earlier mod camaros. Don't hack up your car. Play with the idea in something else you don't care about!

I would think this would be a problem, not to mention the weight of the engine and trans, a duramax and an allison weighs close to 1500 pounds, not sure how much it would weigh with a t56. Would be interesting to see done though!

There are some quick GM cars out there with the Duramax but they all have one problem, they sound like doo doo. Plus packaging it into a 4th gen might be more tricky than you think.

Well i dont think the dmax is much hevier than a iron 454 lsx..???

Also Im an electrican an have wired a few lt1's into some trucks and a station wagon.

If it came down to hacking up the car or not geting the dmax in I would stop and not do it.

I think if it fits in there and bolts to the trans, the only hard part would be fabing the intercooler pipes, relocating the turbo, custom motor mounts. I'm sure there is more but that enough to try and figure out for now!!

Here is a picture I found of a long block duramax, not much differant is it??

I guess it depends on what you like, I probably would sound weird in a car!

I read somewhere with a tune you can make a duramax idle like loppy big block. That might make it better?? not sure I need to do alot of resurch yet!

I know there is a ton of Duramax buddy stories but I have one for you that I know is for sure. My good friend uses EFI live and tunes his own truck, showing right around 200k on the odometer, spraying a big dry shot runs 12.18 in the 1/4. That's a 4x4, 4dr Duramax, not sure the exact year but it's like 4-5 yrs old. He terrorizes most street cars in my area that's running street tires due to the fact we usually blow the tires off while he's hooking on all 4. Moral to my story is I think it would be an awesome build! If he's almost busting 11s at 7500lbs just think of the possibilities with your car at say 4k with the added weight of the duramax. If you get it running pm me so I can help you get a tune that works.

I would just build a short cab short bed truck (1500 style) and be done with it.

The duramax is HEAVY, and a manual would not be "fast" behind a diesel like an auto is

pretty sure the diesel engine/tran would weigh in somewhere around 500 - 1000 pounds more than whats in the car now. the frame and suspension would probably be the biggest problem areas to address, not to mention the new weight distribution. these cars get torque creases in the quarters from stock power.

if you wanted to go wild and crazy, i'd make it a mid engined diesel camaro

if you want something you can drive around daily with moderate power and then go to the track and crank it up something fierce, just build and turbo the ls1 with a boost controller and crank it to the max when youre at the track.

jmo. would be interesting to see though

Agree and disagree with "slow". If I did the swap I would probably stay with the Alison auto tranny however the first true upgrade to the stock tranny is around $4k to make it right and hold the torque. The t56 would be a much cheaper alternative but you would really have to spend some time and money to control the boost levels if you wanted to run any good times. I think my friends truck runs on like 35psi so with the Alison tranny and EFI Live he can control the boost pretty smoothly, with the t-56 it would be alot harder but not impossible. Just be ready for some long nights in the shop and you better have alot of patience.
