Is it possible to drive to the track run 8's and drive home?
I know that everyone has asked a million times about which is the best setup supercharger or turbo and which supercharger. I have searched around and have a basic idea of which makes the most power but i have a couple of questions that I couldnt find answers to.
Basically I am thinking about selling my zo6 before i make it into a race car, and start building a race car that i can drive to the track. I want to be able to run 8's and drive it home. I want to run it on pump gas, 93 octane, but if i have to meoh injection if needed.
The car is a 79 malibu so packaging is not a big concern. My first question is how much power does it take to run 8's with a streetable car setup? An adjustable suspension is fine but no drag shocks or 6000rpm stalls. The car has a 4 link and should hook pretty easily with et streets.
Which power adder is my 2nd question only if it is possible with more than the turbo kit? My concerns are about the price and complexity of a turbo setup needed to run this kind of track time.
Does it need to be some fancy setup with sheetmetal intakes and custom built ss headers? Or can it be done with log manifolds and a carb intake with an elbow? Am i going to be able to run a streetable intercooler setup?
Is it even worth it to go turbo, or is it too easy to do with a procharger or a roots or twin screw? I have no problem cutting a whole in the hood for an 8-71 blower or throwing the biggest twin screw on there?
I want to get it done for 30k. Me and my pops will be doing all of the installing. I just need someone to build an engine that can handle the power for more than a few passes. And the kit if its a procharger or other blower, or the cost of the turbo parts?
I could settle for driving to the track and just running nines if is going to be alot cheaper. That way i can sort the car out and then just have a stronger engine built for more boost later. If it will knock the cost way down.

I know multiple people that are doing it right now & a few cars that are coming out soon that are doing it. The power is fairly easy to make these days with the right builder, it's driving around in a cage that's certified to that ET that is the biggest pain in the ***. Also suspension setup is a biggie.

how much u estimate the car weighing? At 3500 lbs u would need roughly 950 crank horsepower to run 9.0.Can be done with single turbo , truck manifold setup and carb intake and elbow. And u dont need a big stall.Th400 tranny?

If I had that much room and money id go with a dart big m block (4.5 bore with 6.385 stroke = 540c.i.) with a 114mm turbo from precision. should be able to make 1500hp pretty easy and I know a guy with this same setup who drives it on the street 90% of the time and is making 1460rwhp on pump gas using a bs3.

if you have someone build every part of your car sure I bet it would take over $30,000. But if you can do alot of the work and fabrication yourself then i bet you could do it under $15000 easily. Im going to have just under $10,000 in mine (not including car obviously, but a 408 with an 88mm turbo) and I bet it would run dang close to 8's if I had a th400 or a powerglide, but im sticking with an m6 so we will never know lol. But at the same time I am a welder/metal fabricator so Im doing all the work myself, that is where the savings are at.

I would like to see the parts/cost breakdown of these 10-15k 8 sec builds.
Engine/turbo system
Trans/converter/cooler
driveshaft/rearend
wheels/tires/brakes/suspension/safety equipment
engine management/fuel system/tuning/etc

Wow 8s in an m6. Id love to see that. Not saying its never been done but damn thats got to be hard. If you sent the car to someone to get all proper chassis and safty modifications done i would imagine that would be close to 5-7K in it self.

a buddy of mine does it in a malibu! similar setup to yours. 4-link, et-streets, ect.... all he has is a good forged bottom, and all the normal stuff, plus a fogger set up!!!! he only dynos 550 or so at the wheels, but set it up for a big shot of spray for the track. he drives it pretty often to the track. around a 100 miles round trip.

talk to this guy
Its definitely doable, but it may be a little out of a 30k budget.

Hmmm I'll play, let's say an 8.90 car that you have to drive a half our to the track:
Cage/safety/suspension: $7000
Wheels/tires: $1500
Computer: $2000
Turbo, accessories: $4000
Turbo kit: $3000
Trans, converter: $2000 (on the cheap side)
Engine: $9,000
Fuel system: $1700
Misc: $3000
------------------------
$33,200
I think that you'd be at $35K easily because misc. can include a radiator, new fans, trans cooler, etc., it's all that little stuff that can add another several grand.
Heck you should buy my car for $26K.

Thats a pretty good basic break down. Ive done those before on a few setups ive done on my car. As good as it looks on paper for some reason it never ends up being that easy. But i dont think around 30k is too crazy. You would have to do all the labor yourself.
Here is something else to think about. It might be possible to run 8s on less than 30k.but how safe is the car and how reliable. If your running 8s you better make damn sure you have a super safe setup. Running an 8 and then crashing is no fun.
