Default carb 5.3 build questions

5.3 was pulled running from 99 silverado, will be put in the 88 mustang. questions is that im unsure on a few things. i bought the spacer kit from hugh to mate a th350 up and it has the stock 8.8 rear end and 2800 stall. now for the motor i found a good set of ls6 blue springs to put in the Comp Cams XR265 high lift. Its a 212/218 .558/.563" on a 115 LSA. the intake is a victor jr and holley double pumper carb. is this a good set up for a non-dd car? some people have said it wont have ANY torque but with the 2800 stall and the cam rated for 1600rpm-6700rpm range i beg to differ. also the victor intake would be fine throught the power band and never run out of 'breath' but what about the heads? would it be cost eff to have the heads ported? or a good garage port be ok? i know that the intake side should remain on the rough side to ensure there is no fuel puddles and the exhaust side should be mirror finished... any thoughts on if this is a good set up???? thanks -Jon
