General Maintenance & Repairs - Low oil light - threshold?

I'm curious if anyone knows what the threshold is for the low oil light. I've got a 2000 Z28 (LS1 w/ M6). The car has been sitting a lot the last year, so I'm not really surprised about oil consumption, but the low oil light comes on long before the change oil light does. The last time it came on, I still collected just shy of 4L of oil (capacity is 5.3L). I'll tackle the oil consumption after the winter as it won't be going out too often this winter either. But at what point does the low oil light come on and under what conditions?
Thanks!

check your PCV system and check around for leaks. check your dipstick more often
its not good to let the low oil light come on. damage to your engine can occur. i check my oil frequently and add oil if needed. i never let my low oil light come on. these cars do burn oil no matter what

Don't know if it's the same, but it comes on at about 2 quarts low.

my light came on the other night and had to add 2 quarts... problem is i need different valve covers or either a cap that fits. leaks out my breather and i think around the seal.

Mine came on once, before I knew it burned oil. The oil was just barely showing, just a drop on the bottom of the dipstick. I think it took about 1 3/4 quarts to bring it back to the full line.
