Play in my Pinion!! VIDEO!!!!
so i have been getting a "rattle" from under the car and i figured it was probably the exhaust or something stupid however today i got it off the ground and was checking it out and found that my pinion has about a quarter inch of play in it and the seal is leaking now!! so can i just replace the pinion bearing and seal and fix it that way or is it gonna take a complete overhaul oh and this is a new rear with about 15,000 miles on it so im hoping everything else is still good

I would say your gonna need a complete overhaul. Im gonna venture a guess and say your crush sleeve is toast. Oh and your bearings are probably toast too. But i would say the ring gear and the pinion may still be good. I would think those would have the best chance of surviving.

Looks like you have quite a few mods done currently. My advice would be to think about what else you might do to the car that could cause stress to the rearend.
For an example, I had a Moser 12 bolt N/A car DD/some track time. I decided that it would be seeing more upgrades, on of which is Nitrous. Being that my car is an M6 I didn't want to have an issue with stress on the 12 bolt housing so I had a Midwest Chassis Fab9" built...in hopes it will be the last one I will ever need...strength wise for my setup.

hmm well its gonna be modded a lot more before its said and done with but right now nothing crazy but here is a update on the axle i can not find anything that looks bad there were some metal shards on the magnet but other than that and play in the pinion i can not see anything that looks bad the bearings look great so whats going on with this rear end why did the pinion get play in it and what could these metal shards be from?

i am completely lost with this because everything looks in good condition i was thinking that metal was a shim as well but where would it have come from would have this caused the play in the pinion?

Piece of the crush sleeve or something? Something obviously is causing the slop. My 10 bolt with 4.10s was the same way, thats why I pulled it out. I didn't have as much pinion slop as yours but it was pretty close, atleast 1/8" of movement in any direction. I have a feeling the shop that did the gear install used the same crush sleeve on mine and just tighted the F outta the nut..... I just retired the 10 bolt.

ok so here is what i think is going on the shim behind the back bearing on the pinion is what the fragments are and without it there the back bearing backed up causing play in the pinion

"Ilikeppie" I would be thankful if u would let me know when you find something out about your rear....my 4:10's 10bolt has play in the pinion from the pinion nut coming loose...mine now whines badly but used to grind until i tightened the pinion nut. It now whines miserably but doesn't grind/etc. My Z goes to the shop 2nite hopefully just needing seals, bearings, re-setup/dialed in gears

from what i have learned i would say that beings your pinion nut was loose while the pinion was loose it made a new pattern in the gears causing it to whine you will probably need a new gear set as well
