396----bored .030+3.875"stroke.

396----bored .100+3.75"stroke

4.100 if someone can make pistons for you. then you would need custom rings also. BUT, not sure how that would work on a street car, as far as cooling, specially if youre gonna boost it or gas it. concrete it and run it track only i guess. Call and talk to someone with CP Pistons.

or get a motown block which can be bored to a 4.200 max and make ya a 416

4.100 would be a terrible idea for any LT1 setup. Get a new crank, build a 396

Yeah stick with that 396, any bigger and cooling should start to become an issue...

If you HAVE to have something bigger, then a new block is what you need to be looking for.

Speed Density,

Why would 4.100 be bad, because of wall thickness? In the choice betwen 396 or a 383 which would you chose and why?

If you take too much material off the cylinders you are making the distance between the water jackets and the cylinders themselves smaller.. Which will effect heat transfer.

You have to really make it thin to run into problems like that, but I think a 396 is perfect for avoiding these problems. I think the biggest you can go with an LT1 block is like a 413 or something, but then your pushing it with running out of material to play with and the said cooling problems.

The 396 will require more machine work to get everything to fit than a 383 would, but I think the power gain is worth the extra effort.

Other than clearancing for the 396 crank counter weights on the oil pan mounting surface of the block, what is involved for machining?

As far as I know you only have to clearance for the rods/crank and weights like you said, other than that I think your set (dont quote that, havent built one myself yet). Its only a little extra than the 383, well worth the extra power

I have also heard something about the oil pan needing some tweeking, but not totally sure on that either.

I'm gonna do a 396 in a few years when i rebuild the botom end. This winter Advanced induction 200cc's. Do the different throw cranks cost much difference 3.75, 3.875"?

A 383 is a .030 overbore on a 3.75 stroke and a 396 is a .030 overbore on the 3.875. With that being said, think about how stupid a .100 bore would be. My 398ci is right around .40 over

The 396 is about as far as id go on an LT1, there is no point going bigger, you end up putting stuff in jeperody. Cost is just as much as you'd like to spend on parts, id bet its $500 difference.

Soooo, would anyone say that a 396 is not as safe as a 383? If your gonna bore both of the blocks .030". But what about the leverage of the longer rods? Would they stress the cylinder walls more or the piston skirts?

You will get all kinds of opinions about side load/rod angularity between a 383 and 396, however it's anyones' guess as to who is right. Is there a side load difference between the two? Sure. Will it cause wear and tear on the cylinders? Probably. How long will a 396 last compared to a 383? Who the **** knows. It all depends on how it's driven as well as rpm and cylinder pressures ran etc...
It is physically impossible to bore a LT1 block to .100. There was one individual who did this awhile ago who sleeved the block to run a large bore, but never got any further details as to the success of the project. Basically the overwhealming consensus was the cost to sleeve a LT1 block just does not justify the means...
There is little to no price difference between the two stroker cranks you mentioned.
